Late school post is late

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to post this. I've definitely been back in school for about 2 weeks now. Been busy trying to re-acclimate, I guess.

As most of you know, and some of you don't, my major is psychology and my minor is chemistry (although I'm still trying to figure out how to double minor in business). And I just started my sophomore year at Howard Univ, an HBCU (Historically Black College & University).

So, the schedule this year:

Volleyball
Research Methods and Statistics
Research Methods and Statistics Lab
Organic Chemistry I
Japanese II
Intro to Humanities
Health (Online)

It's not that bad of a schedule. I think it turns out to be 16 hours, and I only have one class each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Everything else is Tuesday, Thursday. Plus I'm also going to be doing research with a faculty member for the honors program in order to get prepared for my own research that I will have to do and present senior year. Hopefully I'll also have a job or internship during the fall to put money in my pockets.

As for the classes, I really don't enjoy any of them yet, except for volleyball which really doesn't count. Humanities is easy, though, and health will be, once I get the book. Japanese II would be my favorite but the teacher moves so damn fast. She's trying to teach us grammar and vocabulary at the same time, and it is HARD. Organic and Statistics have no saving grace. They are both exceedingly boring.

In the spirit of my late posting-ness, some big thing has already happened on campus. We had a student led protest on our administration, pushing for change in the lackadaisical style that they currently present. Now, this is not to say I don't like my school because I do love it, but our administration is severely lacking in very key areas. There are too many students without housing, too many students fighting to get validated so they won't get purged from the system, and too many days of wait to even speak to someone about these issues.

On top of that, Howard fails to comply with federal and state law in having working handicapped entrances for all buildings and in having a recycling initiative in place. These are not all of the grievances worked up by the students, but they are a few of the main ones. Years of being ignored led to the protest which took place on the steps of the A building from 11am to about 5pm Friday. (Not to mention the university's custodians also decided to protest since their grievances were also being ignored.) We have a list of demands and set dates for them to be recognized so work can begin on each. If they do not speak to us or begin to work on this list, another protest is scheduled for the day before our Board of Trustees meet, and another on the day and place the Board meets.

This may not seem like much to y'all, not being here and everything, but it's serious to us. No freshmen student should get to school the first day and realize that they do not have housing or the financial aid they were promised. It's not right. And we are hoping to improve this place so it won't happen to students in the future.
