If I see any more people saying "Tell me where in the Constitution it says 'separation of church and state' (hint: it doesn't)'" as a way or saying that religious beliefs should be a viable argument against things like gay marriage or whatever, I am going to go insane and start poking people between the eyeballs with my dressmaking shears.
You dingbats, it's called the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
No, it doesn't say "separation of church and state" but it means the same thing. Also, if it makes you feel better, Madison's original proposal for the wording was:
The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.
So all these arguments of "Oh, we can't have this, it's wrong in the Bible/whatever" and then saying "but it doesn't say separation of church and state in the Constitution!" are wrong, because your religion has no place whatsoever in a state matter. Why? It says so in the Constitution, so go back to school and re-learn what exactly your rights are before you participate in debate, idiots.
Also, re: "but the nation was founded on Christian ideals!" AHAHAHAHA don't make me smack you. First of all, a large proportion of the Founding Fathers weren't as religious as you may think. There were Deists, people with no affiliation, and people against organized religion. Secondly, if you think Christianity is the only religion that guarantees things like freedom, you are wrong and need to go somewhere. Lastly, just because it was a part of our history doesn't mean it has to affect what we do today. I mean, you don't see human sacrifices still happening in regions where they were an occurence.
