[“So, did you think it’d be this awkward?” Sam asked...]

“So, did you think it’d be this awkward?” Sam asked, the corner of her mouth turning up in humor.

Jack leaned back and let out a sigh of relief. “Oh thank god. It’s not just me.”

“Nope.” Sam popped the “p” and then grinned. She tilted her head. “You know, this just really isn’t our style.”

Jack returned her smile, and for a moment, they just sat there, grinning at each other like idiots. “You have no idea how relieved I am to hear you say that.” Jack admitted.

Sam laughed. “This was your idea, you know.”

“I know, it’s just…” Jack faltered. “I wasn’t sure what you’d… like.”

“Really?” said Sam, looking amused but incredulous. “I would have thought after eight years, you’d know by now.”

“Hey!” said Jack, “I couldn’t exactly sit around the campfire and ask you what your favorite dating activities were, you know. Sexual harassment and all…”

Sam rolled her eyes, “Well, I suppose you have a point about the asking. But if you thought about it, would you really have gone white table cloth?”

Jack had the grace to look a little abashed. “Well, maybe not. But hey, you’ve gotta give me some credit! After eight years, a guy might be a little nervous about living up to expectations.”

At this, Sam’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. “Nervous? Really? You?”

Jack looked down. “You don’t have to sound so surprised, Carter.”

Sam leaned across the table and covered Jack’s hand, which was drumming out a nervous pattern, with her own. Jack immediately flipped his hand over and wrapped his long fingers around her hand. Jack looked up and held her gaze.

All the humor left Sam’s face and she stared intently at Jack. “I just… wouldn’t have guessed, is all” she said softly. The heat growing in her eyes was matched in intensity by that in Jack’s.

For a long moment, they stayed still, locked in each other’s gaze.

“So,” Jack quirked a smile, squeezed Sam’s hand, and raised his eyebrows suggestively, “shall we get outta here?”

Sam grinned. “Yeah sure, you betcha.”
