Silverton: phase I

Jun 07, 2008 12:23

So here I am, a million miles away, in the mountains... okay, well, maybe not a million miles away, but at definitely a couple hundred. I am currently living in a town that has a population of about 400, except in the summer when all the tourists come in. I got here, and was kind of disappointed by how beautiful it was supposed to be. I guess I got too much hype, but then it starts to grow on you. It is absolutely incredible living in a place that is completely surrounded by mountains. The fact that I have a thirteener basically right in my front yard is pretty incredible. I could totally just walk right up to it and start going up the mountain. I've been taking lots of pictures of mountains.

I've been learning all about the effects of altitude, seeing as how I'm almost a mile above what I'm used to. Yes, living at a higher altitude does make you more tired for about the first week. Yes, living at higher altitude does affect your alcohol tolerance (two beers the first night and I was good to go. Not even half of a margarita last night and I was feeling giddy). Yes, being at higher altitude does make you feel as though you've been smoking for 15 years as far as physical activity goes. Crazy.

And being in a small town affects you in some crazy ways. I am very glad that Mollie, the woman in charge of the program here, reminded us of how quickly news travels in a small town and how careful of your public image you have to be, otherwise I could see myself getting into some interesting situations, being such an open and fun loving person and all. So yeah. Also, I said something today I never thought I'd hear myself say... when asked if I wanted to go into Durango for some supply shopping, I said "No, I just really don't want to have to deal with the city." Aruuu?!?!??? That's right, I said it. Now, by the time the two months is up, I'll be sick and tired of not having people and stuff to do, and soooooo ready to come back, but for now, I'm enjoying the time away.

I can't wait for people to come and visit me. I especially can't wait to see my first visitor, which I found out, is hopefully going to be next week. I also met a few of the kids yesterday, they are going to be great! It's going to be a fun summer.

So now, if any of you would like me to send you a postcard, or a letter or something (I've been going absolutely crazy on the postcards, I love it) you should send or text me your address.

That's all for now. I'll probably post again next time I get on the internet, which is not often, so bear with me.
