Day Four: Sittin' in the middle of Route 66

Oct 24, 2009 16:04

Well, above it anyway...

I am in a McDonald's Rest Stop with a small Will Rogers Museum on the ground floor and a big Mickey D's upstairs. The building is a glassed-in bridge over the highway and the trucks are racing irectly beneath our table. Looking out the window you get the odd sense of being immaterial, run over but not really THERE. Oh well, better than the real thing, no? A local football team (the "Union Black" is celebrating at the next table.)

We are in Oklahoma, having conquered Missouri with the help of gasoline, donuts, iced coffee and some really good barbecue in the fair city of Springfield. We did not go to Greasy Joe's but to Buchanan's. What a way to kill livestock!

We are getting our Route 66 kicks here and there, yelling "JESUS!" every time we pass a big crucifix on the side of the highway, and stopping at the odd knife store and antique shop along the way. Seeing America.
It's strange but it's there. We've also seen a giant pink elephant, a flying moose, and something called Joe's Dungeon--a costume shop in St. Louis that sounds a lot more fun than it probably is.

The trip still seems to be going according to plan though the thought of skipping the Cali bit for extended playtime in Vegas is a tempting one. We shall see. Not sure what we're doing in OKC tonight but am sure it will involve the death of a cow.

OK. Time to get this show on the road and it's really no wonder you can feel it right down to your knucklebones....
