So not even two days after finishing the first season... Literally just finished the second season of The Vampire Diaries. I've decided to post my thoughts verbatim as I wrote them in my notes while watching each episode.
- Tyler's hesitation to save Caroline really bugged me from a character growth stand point. Yes he has trust issues, and YES people are lying to him, but to trust people you just met over someone you've known for years was just silly given his trust issues. I'm glad Caroline got mad and told him they weren't friends, it shows she's independent and strong. Of course I already knew that. God I love you Caroline!
I agree about C & T here - though I think it's important to point out that from Tyler's viewpoint, the "people he'd known for years" just betrayed him UTTERLY - he just found out that Caroline is 'close' with one of the monsters who murdered his Uncle Mason. That's pretty awful. Like (go with me here), think about if you found out I was a vampire, and that I'd hidden my origins from you. And just previously you learned another vampire I hang out with, let's call him Damien, murdered one of your brothers. Would you need to pause before saving me from all of your brother's trusted friends? Would you question, even for a minute, who I am and if I was involved? That's what Tyler does here. I don't want to defend him too much because yeah, he fucked up. But I understand that momentary pause. This kid is being pulledin all directions and he;s far from perfect. He messes up. BUT. What's more important is that he KNOWS it, and he makes up for it. He chooses redemption and the right path. CAN YOU TELL I AM A TYLER LOCKWOOD STAN? I really empathize with him in everything he does.
- It seems to me that Elena and Stephan take a lot of "breaks" from the drama. I mean, granted there's a lot of drama, but still.
They are each other's break from the drama - it's kind of the defining characteristic of their relationship. They cling to each other for whatever joy they can have. It's actually pretty touching.
- is there ANYONE that hasn't been in love with Katherine on this show?! But, she's so sweet and lovable hhahahaha
- And all of Stephan's talk about everything being intensified as a vampire made me wonder; If Stephan is the vampire with his emotions 'turned on' then why does it seem like his love for Elena isn't nearly as intensified as Damon's.
Damon is the practical brother - he gets shit done regardless of the consequences. He's very task-oriented. But Stefan is completely tied to his emotions - he lives a ~Feelings~ life. He lets others do the doing. It's a way for him to keep his world in order because he's so intense about everything. I believe he loves Elena with everything in him - but he also respects her and cedes to her wishes, almost to a fault. Damon won't do that - he'll do whatever it takes to protect her whether she wants it or not. I actually admire Stefan's deferential and supportive attitude towards Elena. He cedes to her wishes and by doing so, keeps himself grounded. There's not a lot of GROWTH to be had in that scenario, but there is a sort of peace and serenity to it. Damon outright disrespects and abuses Elena's trust repeatedly - yes, under the auspices of keeping her safe, but still. That she continues to trust Damon despite all this is a testament to Elena's capacity for connection with the Other, and her over-identification issues re: Damon (please see Alex's meta once again for a MUCH more eloquent series of thoughts on this).
- Stephan, I understand you're worried about your bro, but you're controlling behavior is pissing me off this season!
Heh. This is precisely the moment when my heart exploded into a million fiery Stefans, never to be the same again? This episode is what broke me open with love for Stefan and for the EPIC, SWEEPING ROMANCE that is the Salvatore Brothers. BROTHERS ARE THE REASON. This whole damn show is about how Brothers will love each other forever. Will in fact destroy the world for each other. Everyone else, including Elena, can get in line. The Salvatores are the REASON. I was awestruck by Stefan in this episode. There is no boundary he will not cross for his brother. MY EMOTIONS! MY EMOTIONS!
SOMEBODY STOP ME, I CANNOT STOP LOVING THEM.
I LOVE READING ALL YOUR THOUOOOUUUUUUUGHTS!!!!! This is so exciting. Now I can babble at you infinity about everything. I have meta recs. And fic recs. and and Oh! I've made TWO Brothers fanmixes which you should for sure definitely own. And and - oh! You should take my TVD kissing poll. And come talk to me about the episodes when they air because I like that. I like you. Let's get married. Oh, wait you're marrying Blake in 20 minutes. Never mind. Also I love you. Bye.
ELIJAH IS FLAWLESS. FLAW. LESS. RESPECT THE HAIR FORCE THAT IS ELIJAH. *straightens tie*
as I mentioned to Alex, it was just an observation while watching an episode. MY FELLING HAVE CHANGED AND I LIKE HIM. A LOT. BUT I WILL NEVER RESPECT THE HAIR! LOL
I ship Elena/Normal Human Life much harder than with either of her vampires.
ME TOO! And I agree that it's hard to ship her with either of them without shipping her with both of them.
- John Gilbert is fantastic. I love him. I have issues with the execution of the adoption story-arc, and his role in it, but aside from that? Man is GOLDEN. He hunted monsters and tried to protect his nephew and his baby girl from them. He did the right thing. He knew he failed her (even though he didn't - Elena's consistent disgust with his actions only proves to me what an unreliable narrator she is in her own life.). He gave up his life to save her. That's a pretty excellent father. I WEPT when he died.
I have grown to appreciate his character after this season, but I still had problems with his scenes with Alaric or Jenna, they just seemed so unnecessary.
- Who is Lucy? I Like Lucy.. :) HAHAHAHA You slay me. Could you be any cuter? I don't think so.
