Meet Me

He watched her walk away and hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind since.

She had said her name was Chris, though it was probably short for something else, like Christy or Christine. The way she talked to him, it was obvious she was close to this other him, calling him ‘Alle’ and being so familiar with his life. He wondered how much she knew, what else was different about his life. Was he happier? Were things easier? She had mentioned Celestial Being, that terrorist group, but…she didn’t fit what he imagined when the word ‘terrorist’ came to mind. She was simply…a woman, bright and cheerful, at least, until she realized she wasn’t with who she thought she was.

The look in her eyes when she said she loved him, he had never seen that before, not from any of his previous lovers at least. She had cried, knowing he didn’t know her. It broke her heart and he didn’t even know her full name.

Stocking shelves in the drugstore he worked at was a mindless chore that gave him time to think. Sometimes he wasn’t sure that was a good thing, with how his thoughts kept going back to her. He thought about her daily, wondering if she ever went back home to find her normal life, if she was still upset and alone. He wondered if there was another her for him, one that didn’t know him like he didn’t know her. Was she already with someone? Was their meeting a fluke? What was left now for him?

“Hey, excuse me.” He looked up, and saw her again. His mind roared with noise then went silent as she watched him, eyes curious as she held a box of detergent in each hand, both different brands.

“Excuse me,” she said again, and he made a noise to signal he heard her, “Which one is better? I don’t really do laundry, but now that my roommate moved out, I’m stuck with it.”

“A-Ah, that one,” he said, pointing to the box in her left. She glanced at it and smiled.

“Okay, thanks…” She read his nametag, “Allelujah? That’s a strange name. Do people really call you that?”

“Alle,” he shrugged and she laughed.

“I like that! Alle,” she tested it, “Much better.”

She smiled and turned and he stood up, gripping her arm. She looked at him and blinked.

“Wh…What about you? What’s your name?” He could feel his cheeks flush.

“Christina,” she laughed, “But you can call me Chris.”

Christina

“Ah, I…I don’t usually do this, especially not at work, but…would you like to get a coffee later?” he stammered. She looked at him in surprise a moment before giggling and nodding.

“Alright, let me give you my number,” she grinned, pushing up his sleeve and pulling a pen from her bag. She removed the lid with her teeth before scribbling a set of digits onto his arm. “Call me some time. We can set up that coffee,” she said, returning the pen to her purse, “See you Alle.”
