I rarely complain about the weather. I find its whys and wherefores interesting. I enjoy seasonal change, day-to-day variations, and the odd ways it differs from more temperate weather.
My least favorite times are when it's stagnant, either literally or metaphorically. That's when I'm most likely to complain. And then it's more weariness than objective dislike of the weather.
So I thought I might list the reasons that I have to be thankful for whatever weather I've got. Right now, it's still cold. It's been icy, and should be icy again. It's actually wet. It hasn't been that windy. I'm getting tired of it. So why do I like it?
* Coziness. I can snuggle under heavy throws on the sofa, use a blanket on the bed, wear fleece-lined and wooly whatevers.
* Boots. I love how boots look and feel.
* Tights and leggings. So comforting, snug, and comfortable. Let me wear shorter skirts, dresses, and tunics.
* Layers. Layers are fun to put together, visually very interesting without much effort. It's easy to dress cool temperatures at work.
* Fires. I love building and tending a wood fire. I love the smell and the sound and the look.
* Eggnog!
* Good napping weather.
* Gray skies. It's calming on the eyes.
* Windy days: Exhilarating. I can wear a hat over my hair.
* Calm days: My hair doesn't get messed up.
* Discovering fun new outerwear. Down coats. Layering down coats. Ice cleats.
* Frozen precipitation. Camping out at home, working at home, "stolen" days that I can use or just relax in. Bundling up for a walk. Happily taking bad pictures. The way that the white on the ground makes that ground stand out and covers up the ugliness.
* Not having to worry about painting toenails.
* The attic isn't hot.
* No lawn to mow.
* Cooking on the stove or using the oven. Warming up the house and tummy.
There's the other times, though. I get tired of the days that are still hot and uncomfortable and yet lack the cachet of being over 100° F, or some other distinction. When summer is gone but actual fall temperatures are a million days away. So it's especially important to remember what I like about those times.
* Warm feet and hands. I don't have to constantly be grabbing for slippers and a robe in the morning.
* Getting dressed isn't a chilly ordeal.
* Warm showers with no cold drafts.
* Speed and ease of putting outfits together. I don't have to wangle a coordinating turtleneck, or a camisole, and a scarf, and a cardigan, and leggings, etc.
* Speed of getting dressed. Fewer pieces! No complicated tucking or making sure layers are in the right order!
* The actual outfit is seen. No more being covered up by the same handsful of coats and cardigans.
* Windy days: I feel alive, even when it's blisteringly hot.
* Calm days: My hair doesn't get messed up. (I like windy days more, so I need this reminder.)
* Never any hat hair.
* Bare legs.
* Shorts!
* Easier to get out the door. No coat, scarf, earmuffs, gloves, or umbrella. Just go!
* Sandals and bare feet. Free the toes!
* Living on sandwiches. Easy and cool.
* Long sewing sessions in comfort. No shivering in underthings, wriggling in and out of muslins.
* Never-ending sunshine. Bright lighting to late in the evening. Cheerful mornings.
* Dry feet, hands, face, car. No carrying or wrestling with an umbrella.
* Blue or light skies. Seeing for miles from the lookout near my house. Puffy white clouds (sometimes).
* Warmth of the sun when coming out of super-cooled buildings.
* Green and gold landscapes everywhere.
I feel happier now. :)
