With Himchan attending an early morning doctor’s appointment, Yongguk is left to do the school run. It’s not so hard, he thinks to himself - he’s done it with Junhong plenty of times so an extra kid to get ready couldn’t be that difficult, right?

Only Yongguk hadn’t taken into account that Himchan has taken over the school run and the kids have gotten into a routine, so when he offers the boys a choice between captain crunch or cornflakes, Junhong refuses both. ‘Cherry Tomatoes!’ Squeals the curly haired boy with a pout.  Jongup just reaches for the captain crunch because when given the choice any kid would want the extra sugary option. But Junhong still insists on his favourite red fruit.

‘I want cherry tomatoes!’

‘… and toast’

‘Junhong-ah, I want never gets’ Yongguk scolds, dropping two slices of bread into the toaster. He opens the fridge door in search of butter and tomatoes when he hears Junhong blow a raspberry at his turned back. Jongup simply giggles, his milk slopping over the rim of his bowl.

Getting dressed doesn’t exactly go to plan either because Junhong ends up wearing two left shoes in different colours and Jongup wears one right shoe because Junhong’s feet are a lot smaller than his despite the year age gap. Yongguk curses himself as he swaps and reties their shoes, finally finding a matching pair for Junhong who can’t seem to leave his shoes together in one place.

When he finally has them ready; dressed, teeth and hair brushed and books in bags, he ushers them out the door and quickly locks it behind them. They’re a few minutes late to leave but they should just make it to nursery on time, Jongup pulls at his sleeve.

‘Ah.. ah… app…Guk’

Jongup frowns at the floor, tiny face scrunched in disappointment because he still can’t say it. Not that Yongguk minds much because he knows Jongup is trying and even though he can’t quite call him dad yet, it’s enough that he’s trying.  ‘What’s up, Jongieyah?’

Jongup casts him a nervous glance through his long eyelashes, eyes quickly diverting to his shoes which he scuffs on the carpet. ‘I forgot…’  There’s tears welling up in his large brown eyes and Yongguk melts a little though there’s a small pang of worry settling into his chest.

‘I forgot my sweater’

Yongguk groans as he unlocks the front door.

When they moved in together it was decided that Junhong would change nursery school because Jongup’s was closer to their new place and Junhong would settle into a new environment quicker. When it came to other kids the younger of the two wasn’t as shy.  Yongguk is reminded of that as they get to the school gates and several children wave over shouting at the two.

Jongup clings to Junhong.

‘Ok boys, Appa’s gotta go’ Yongguk says, bringing himself down to the boys’ level by crouching. Junhong nods brightly, seeming to care less but Jongup looks a little uneasy at the thought, clinging harder to his step-brother. He’d been so quiet all morning. Yongguk wonders if he was always like this.

‘I’ll come back later to pick you up with Himchan-Appa later though, okay?’ The two nod and he notices Jongup brighten a little at that. He reaches for Junhong first, ruffling his soft baby curls and swinging him in the air. The small boy howls with laughter as he’s placed gently back down. ‘I’ll see you, later tonight, Okay, Jongupie?’ The boy nods, holding out his palms. Without a thought Yongguk brings his own palms down as though playing pat-a-cake and that’s all it takes for the small boy to burst out into loud, howling sobs.

Yongguk is taken back.

Junhong shakes his head like a parent reprimanding their child. ‘Appa, you did it wrong’ He scolds, his expression deadly serious. He pats the older boy on the shoulder with soft cooing noises. ‘You’re supposed to kiss his hands and say “Have a nice day”. That’s the way Himchan-Appa does it’

Oh.

‘Jongup-ah, shall we try again?’ Yongguk holds his hands out to the small boy. It takes a little coercion from Junhong but eventually he shuffles forwards and puts his hands, palm up, on top to Yongguk’s hands. The male leans forwards, kissing each of Jongup’s palms then smiles brightly at him. ‘Have a nice day!’ It seems to do the trick and before he can say anything more, Junhong and a now smiling Jongup run off to greet their teacher.

Yongguk is glad that tomorrow Himchan will resume the school run.
