LEAF NZ Tour Diary --- Day 13 (Nelson)
RoTK tomorrow!
Helicopter tour this morning … whee! We arrive a bit late, but it’s okay - the helicopter still hasn’t returned from another job. The helicopter guys are very laid back and most welcoming. Make us cups of tea and coffee while we wait.
Flight is amazing! We fly over and circle the Takaka Hill location, bit hard to see what was filmed there. On to Mt Olympus … and where on earth are we going to land?! Oh, right - there’s a space just big enough for a helicopter!
We have about half an hour to look around the site.
Girls think pilot is great - Glîr does a bit of digging … trying to set me up apparently …!
Price is less than we thought and we each get a laminated photo of the hobbits in a heli … bonus! Just before we leave the helicopter base, one of the pilots (?) shows us some photos of himself as a Rohan extra. He’s got the look for it. Stocky and long blond hair and beard. Cool!
Drive back to Nelson, get petrol and lunch at a service station where Lilac realises she has left her purse at the heli base. She goes back to get it with the other girls while Glîr and I drive to the motel to collect Vanya. We have agreed to meet up at the World of Wearable Arts complex. We see the One Ring sculpture and check out the shop which is great, but sadly no time for the actual exhibitions.
Decide to chop out the brewery visit as not enough time. Back into Nelson to hoof it down to Jen Hansen’s jewellers to see the copies of the ring. Then we split up for shopping and dinner. Glîr, Vanya and I go to Flapjacks on my recommendation - sadly, not as good as the Hamilton branch. And the service has much to be desired.
