So everybody knows that when you go off to college, you need a laptop. A little portable computer to do all of your bidding right? Well it seems the new trend is no longer PCs but mac books. The young crowd loves macs. Because they are SOOO awesome.
Everybody that has had a conversation with me for more than five minutes knows that. I -hate- Macs. It's nothing personal, i just think they are impractical, clunky, and treat the user like a baby. But today, Today i have been driven over the edge, today.... i am posting, my anti mac rant.
First, My disclaimer:
I'm sorry if i offend anybody, but i will try my best to keep all of this rant constructive, and not 3 year old name calling. Secondly, i would like to point out, that i hate MACS. Not apple. I am a proud owner of an ipod and iphone.
Number UNO: The mac advertisements.
WE all know what i'm talking about, the ad with the two guys on the screen, one hip guy representing the mac, and a nerdy fat dude representing the PC. Sure they ads can be funny, but 90 percent of the time they are innacurate, and i feel like a five year old could come up with a better commercial. All of the commercials are NEGATIVE towards PCs. You don't see windows with any anti-mac ads. Because i believe windows has more integrity than that.
Just the other day, i saw one ad bash how "insecure" windows is. The next week there was an ad saying that windows is hard to use because of user accounts.
SO lets get this straight, first they bash security, then they bash the fix to that security problem. Not to mention, windows, osX and Linux all act the same way in that respect. If you're going to bash windows at least know what you are talking about.
Numero DOS: The Price.
I understand that all americans like to buy overpriced things, gasoline, starbucks, sunglasses.
But when it comes to computers you would think you would have some friggan common sense.
I'm going to let the numbers do the bashing here.
The BRAND NEW Mac book pros start at $2000. With the following specs:
2.4GHz
* Intel Core 2 Duo
* 15-inch widescreen
* 2GB Memory
* 250GB hard drive
* NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 256MB
(Directly from the apple website.)
Well Lets open up dell.com and see how much a pc with the same specs would cost.
*Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB, 3MB Cache)
*3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
*250GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
*256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
*15 inch widescreen LCD
The cost you ask? $1,224
Yes, that's 800 dollars less than the macbook pro. If that isn't a fucking rip off, i don't know what is.
Numero TRES: The operating system.
The operating system is the most important factor in how efficient a computer is. I can safely say after using most of the operating systems out there, that there is not a BEST operating system. If you want to run some PHP, do some hacking or programming? Linux is the best. Need to set up shop in a corporation with user policies? You’ll most likely pick Windows. Do you want to have the cutest little laptop with a camera built in and do cutsey movie editing and brag to your friends that your better than them? You’ll probably pick OS X.
If you talk to any mac advocate about why OSX or leopard is better they will probably say something like. "It's more secure" "There are no viruses" "It doesn't crash like windows does" "Macs are way more efficient". Well lets go through that list.
"It's more secure"
-If anything macs are much less secure due to the lack of freedom that the user has compared to windows or linux. You can't tweak your security settings nearly as fine as you could in windows or linux. And Every hacker i have ever had a chat with will tell you that osX is the easiest to hack. When apple came out with their new macbook air. They put out a challenge to hackers to see how long it would take them to hack into a specfic macbook air. How long did it take the hackers? around 30 seconds.
"There are no viruses"
-Intially this statement is true. But if you are going to use this in argument you might as well be saying "Mac's are idiot proof". If you don't know that you should always have an anti-virus program. and you don't know that you shouldn't open a random .exe you downloaded off of a porn site. Then maybe you should get a mac, because you are too dumb to know how to maintain your computer. And all you can ever run in your life is an idiot proof computer like a mac. Plus, i'm going to add this quote from PC magazine
"When Apple shipped iPods containing a worm last year, instead of issuing a humble mea culpa, Apple took a swipe at Microsoft, saying, "As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it." As you can imagine, that didn't fly with security experts. How about an apology to the folks who were unlucky enough to buy the infected iPods, period?"
"It doesn't crash like windows does."
-I've been using windows for around 14 years of my life, and my computer has only had a fatal crash, maybe twice. So thats once every 7 years? That sounds like a whole lot of crashing to me. Do you want to know how many mac users i've talked to that have lost all of their shit because their kernel decided to kill itself? Well, I don't have that many fingers.
Macs suck. Plain and simple.
If you think otherwise....bring it.
