Learned helplessness. A actual term from pyschology. They did an experiment with a box with two sides. One side has an electrified floor that sends a great deal of pain when you touch it, and the other side is just an ordinary floor.
They put a dog in the electrified side, and of course, he simply jumps to the other side to escape the pain. The next trial they put a harness that holds the dog into place. So all he can do is stand there and get electrocuted. The first few trials he whimpers in pain and tries to escape. Until eventually the dog simply gives up. TO the point where he will lay down on the electircal pad, which is even more painful then standing up on it. Even when they take off the harness all he does is lay down. Until they have to teach the dog to jump to the other side again.
That is how an animal (Given humans are just advanced animals) learn "learned helplesness"
This is also a big factor in human depression, when a human feels like he or she has hit rock bottom, he or she simply gives up. Admits defeat.
I don't often float my own boat, but i'm getting pretty good at ping pong, i've played with my friend and i win a little less than half time. He is better than me, but he has been playing ping pong for a long time.
Well today, i just couldn't seem to concentrate. I lost all 4 games we played. A few times, 5 or 6 points in a row would be in his favor. And no matter how hard i try to stay calm and cool. This FIRE inside of me gets pissed. Which makes me play worse. I lose more points. Until eventually, that fire inside uses all it's energy and you just feel -helpless-.
I had to stop playing, i felt useless. I went outside and smoked to calm myself down. But to my avail. It didn't work.
I still feel hallow and empty. All from 4 games of ping pong. Isn't the human mind FUCKING GREAT?!
Fuck.
