Title: Take a breath, and then one step after the other
Recipient: the_resolver
Group & Pairing: VIXX, Hakyeon/Taekwoon (Neo)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Hakyeon and Taekwoon's have been in a relationship for quite a long time now, but the latter refuses to take their relationship to the next step, because of reasons.

It's all messy kisses over feverish skin. Hakyeon gets pinned against the wall in a minute, and their lips are connected in the most heated ways ; but as soon as his fingers brush against his lover's skin, slowly trailing up the toned chest under his shirt, the latter catches his hands and stops them from going any further.

Hakyeon groans in frustration as Taekwoon leaves him in the room on his own, again.

¤

“Why?” he asks, just as he walks out of their bathroom, wiping his hair dry distractedly, water drops still dripping from his face.

Taekwoon only looks up from the book in his hands. He is sitting on their bed, but doesn't make a move, only lets go of said book which ends up settling itself in his knees.

“Why not?” he finally answers after a short moment of silence, with the soft and tender voice Hakyeon has come to love so much.

The smaller scowls at this somehow, eyebrows furrowing in dislike, before he eventually sighs and goes to sit on the edge of the bed as well, letting go of the towel and then lying flat on his stomach, mouth and face pressed into the pillow.

“Still...” he grumbles “it's not... I just don't understand why”.

He doesn't understand why he has to meet Taekwoon's parents before they take their relationship to the next step. He doesn't understand how they are even involved with anything regarding anything that goes down between the two of them. Meeting Taekwoon's parents although they've been dating for quite some time now sounds way too soon for him, and the mere thought of it manages to send bubbles of uneasiness swirling inside Hakyeon's heart, threatening to explode anytime in his chest.

Instead of replying, the raven haired boy catches the previously abandoned towel and starts drying Hakyeon's hair more thoroughly, (since the latter didn't really put much thoughts and efforts into it, if the droplets leaking down his long neck are anything to go by).

Hakyeon would like to have at least one decent reason, so he would just understand, so it would make it clear. They're not in high school anymore, they're not kids, and soon they will graduate from their university as well. He doesn't think he's Taekwoon's first boyfriend ever either, so he would just like to understand what is going through his mind and why the yearn to go see the latter's parents before doing anything is so strong.

Sadly enough, Taekwoon doesn't talk much -but it's not as if he hadn't known this, right? He has known from day one, how quiet the singer is. Yet if Hakyeon seems to understand him most of the time without him having to voice out his thoughts, this time around it's not the case.

After a while, and a long silence only shattered by Hakyeon's short groans of desperation, Taekwoon finally speaks up, his voice still soft.

“I just promised...”

It does not help that despite how tender the fingers in his hair are right now, Hakyeon doesn't feel the slightest right about this. It doesn't make him any more comfortable about the whole situation, no.

Too soon, too soon, Hakyeon thinks.

“You don't know about it, hyung?”

Hakyeon raises one brow, genuinely confused by his dongsaeng's words. He doesn't even know what Jaehwan is talking about, but he's not sure he likes it. Especially with the latter now avoiding his eyes like plague, as if he had done a mistake only by bringing this up. But the beautifully tan skinned young man doesn't understand what any of this mean.

He had only tried to get explanations out of his and Taekwoon's friend, after all, only to get stuck to this point.

“What do you mean? What do I not know?”

Right, Jaehwan has known Taekwoon for much longer than he has. Yet, knowing that something has been hidden from him like this -and still ignoring what, makes him feel all sorts of uneasy and only the slightest frightened. (maybe just a bit annoyed too, though he wouldn't admit it, even to himself)

“Spill it out, Jaehwan. You already started anyway. What is it?” his voice isn't harsh but rather pressing.

Yet Jaehwan still seems so hesitant that Hakyeon lets out a sigh, resigned to never know what he meant by this, or at least not before a long time.

That's why the words that follow feel like a harsh slap to his face.

“Both of his parents died in a car accident, a few years back.”

(only it's not his cheek that is red, nor burning and aching, -but his eyes and heart.)

Only later that night, as Taekwoon is fast asleep, does Hakyeon lay on his back and watch the ceiling without uttering a word.

The only thing that troubles the silence of those late hours are Taekwoon's even intakes of breathes and his ever so slowly rising and lowering chest.

Hakyeon listens to this soothing sound and closes his eyes for a while, but as he reopens them, he cannot ignore the lingering feeling in his chest which seems to tug at his heartstrings a bit too hard for his liking.

He doesn't understand how Taekwoon could have not told him this (yet he somehow does). Mostly he doesn't understand how he could have been so blind not to see, how could he had only those selfish thoughts about his fears when his lover might have been in pain. (but he's not responsible for all the unsaid things that lay in this relationship either).

Hakyeon might not be Taekwoon's first ever boyfriend, but he is his first since his parent's death.

And maybe that's all the difference.

(he's not sure he wants to go though. he feels even more inadequate to meet them than before.)

¤

“Ok, we'll go. To your parents...”

Silence fills the whole room as Taekwoon only looks up from his homework, a tangible confusion sketching the lines of his expression.

But once again, he does not voice out the obvious question which is written all over his face. He merely nods, in the slightest way, and Hakyeon is pretty sure his eyes are looking past him.

“On Saturday, then.”

Hakyeon bites his lips for a moment, and takes in a deep breathe before he finally replies.

“Ok... Ok. On Saturday, then.”

(Saturday comes way faster than expected -for Hakyeon at least)

It's snowing. It's one of the first snow of the year, and it's falling delicately upon the stones and ground of the small graveyard. All sounds are deafened by the winter weather.

Hakyeon feels the freezing wind battling his cheeks and his hair, and his lips are dry as he bites on them. Taekwoon is by his side, and both of their hands are in the pockets of his coat.

“Hi, mom, dad. It's me, Taekwoon”. His voice is soft and barely audible, so much that Hakyeon almost missed it.

His heart is hammering in his chest as he listens to his boyfriend's words. After a while, Taekwoon looks back at him, slightly expectant, and he understands instantly, though the nervousness which seems to twist his insides is back.

He's not so sure he wants to do anything. He feels a bit sick somehow, sadness eating away at his heart slowly and painfully as he catches a hint of something he can't seem to correctly decipher in his lover's eyes.

But after a while, after he has succeeded in calming down his heartbeat for a bit, he eventually lets go of Taekwoon's hands, takes a step forward and stops in front of the two graves that only emits the same biting coldness as the one sinking in his heart.

“Hello, Mr and Mrs Jung, I'm Cha Hakyeon, nice to meet you.” he says, with the best cheerful tone he can manage in this situation (only the slightest shaky), the sketch of a smile on his lips.

(while he's talking to the wide world of sheer white and gray in front of him, he suddenly feels

Taekwoon's hand against his again and warm fingers intertwining with his own.)

¤

They come back home hours after, when the sun has already set and the night has already fallen on them.

And when they lay in bed, later, after having removed their clothes (wet from the long hours spent in the snow), they barely even talk. They just lay there, Hakyeon burying his face into Taekwoon's comfortable chest, gentle hands drawing patterns on his back.

It's warm under the covers and in each other's arms. It's still snowing outside. Hakyeon doesn't want to ever let go.

(and he's almost positive he heard someone whispering something such as “thank you” just before he drifted off to sleep)

A/N: Ok, so I'm really terribly sorry, I just realized I read and remembered the plot you requested wrong so I'm so so so terribly sorry. It changed everything, I'm so sorry; moreover I don't know where I went with this.

I'd redo it if I had the time, I'll redo it whenever I can.
