on the other hand

I'm a big fan of creators rights over copyright infringers. This is obvious if you read much I write. On the other hand....

You remember the song "Land Down Under" by Men At Work? That came out in 1983, for all the youngsters out there. My senior year of high school. It was a huge hit. Love it. Still sing along to it. Even tried Vegemite once because of it (never EVER again, thanks!) It's part of my Mythical Childhood.

Seems that the flute riff during the bridge was copied from an Australian Girl Guides' song and the band has been ordered to pay back royalties to the rights holder. Which is a LOT of money.

However, the original writer of the song it was taken from is dead. The current rights holder is a big music company.

If the money were going to the heirs of the songwriter, or even to the Girl Guides, I would be all over that like yeah. But bigass music company now owns the rights and is asking for 40-60% of all lifetime profits from the song?

That's a load of dingo's kidneys. Seriously.

Down yours, mates.
