Atkins, how it works

Okay. Here's how it works. Because some people need to understand this. This cycle of fail has got to stop.

My body burns carbs for fuel. When it burns carbs, it stores fat. When it burns carbs, it craves MORE carbs, and the fat piles on.

So, to correct this, if you lower your carb intake to the absolute bare minimum, the body is forced to switch gears and burn fat, hence, weight loss. Simple, right?

But this method of weight loss is NOT like calorie counting.  You can't just have a muffin or a potato and say "oh well, I'll just walk the stairs a few times and burn it off." By introducing that many carbs back into the system all at once, your body goes "Oh boy, carbs!" and then RESETS YOUR METABOLISM BACK TO BURNING CARBS AND STORING MORE FAT. That's what the test strips are for, to measure if you're burning fat (reaction) or carbs (no reaction). That's why they're important.

And once your body switches back, it can take 48-72 hours of very few carbs to reset the body. It's not a quick jump back on. During which, no weight loss.

So every time I am confronted with a "oh, I forgot you can't eat this, but here have it anyway, it's your favorite" I have to start back from zero again.

Every time.

Every SINGLE time.

I have to start again. Again and again.

And people wonder why I get so damn frustrated about food. When all that's there to eat at work, all the free food, is fruit and cereal. Want something with protein? That'll cost you an arm and a leg. But here, have all the grain and fructose your body can't stand anymore! It's FREE!

Atkins only works if you permit it to work.

If someone you know is on Atkins, do NOT throw starch, grain, or sugar at them. Would you buy an alcoholic booze, or hand a drug addict a bottle of Percocet?

Thank you.
