so I'm rewatching the Avatar: the Last Airbender series... and suddenly I had a terrible, horrible awful evil worldshattering thought.

But because I'm not a fan of the series initially and never did all the fan stuff, I don't know if this was ever addressed before.

It's Sozin's comet. The thing that gives firebenders nigh unlimited power.

I just realized...

Comets aren't made of fire. They're space rock that looks like it's on fire from here, but in reality are large frozen balls of junk that are outgassing due to the heat of the sun as they pass close in perihelion (the closest point in its pass). It's not friction (no friction in a vaccuum).
