The Doctor was born and lived his early live on Gallifrey, planet of
the Time Lords. When he was eight, the Doctor and his friend the
Master looked on the Untempered Schism (a gap to look at the
space-time continuum). This imposed on the Doctor the need to protect
all human life. It drove the Master insane. He was educated and spent
the majority of his early life on Gallifrey, learning the ways of the
Time Lord. A pity that he totally sucked at school.

In 1963, the Doctor and his granddaughter, Susan, landed in Britain so
Susan could complete her education. After two teachers (Barbara and
Ian) found the TARDIS, the Doctor was forced to take them with him.
Together the four encountered Daleks, Cybermen and the Zarbi. However,
the Doctor's old body was slowly starting to give out. He regenerated
into the Second Doctor after succumbing to old age.

The Second Doctor's adventures mostly consisted of the same-fighting
Daleks, fighting Cybermen and generally protecting the planet. The
Doctor discovered a former friend, the War Chief, was giving vessel
technology to the War Lords, intent on conquering humanity. The Doctor
betrayed the War Chief, giving his location to the Time Lords.
However, he broke the cardinal Time Lord rule: never interfere. The
Doctor was exiled to Earth and forced to regenerate.

The Third Doctor reluctantly worked with UNIT, a military organization
designed to stop paranormal threats. The Master came to Earth, allying
himself with the Nestene consciousness in order to take over the
planet. This, and other schemes of the same nature, failed thanks to
the Doctor. When the first three Doctors stopped Omega from destroying
the Time Lords, the Doctor's sentence was lifted and he was free to
come and go as he pleased-he mostly stayed on Earth, though. He
sacrificed his own life to save Sarah Jane by exposing himself to high
levels of radiation.

After regenerating into the Fourth Doctor, the Doctor was insanely
eager to get off Earth. After all, he had been on Earth for a lot
longer than he would want. However, he was persuaded to stay for a
while and help out UNIT. Eventually, he left Earth with Harry Sullivan
and Sarah Jane Smith. The Time Lords sent him on a mission to attempt
to prevent the creation of the Daleks. This, more than any other
mission so far, helped impose on the Doctor his morals. He could
prevent all the destruction that the Daleks caused, but only by
killing off the Daleks. Faced with such a moral decision, the Doctor
refused, showing his need to protect all living creatures. While he
still killed on occasion, the Doctor always hated it and tried to find
a better, less violent way to solve problems. Harry left the TARDIS
after their defeat of the Zygons and the Doctor and Sarah travelled
the galaxy by themselves for a while.

Eventually, the Doctor received a summons back to Gallifrey. As humans
weren’t allowed on Gallifrey, he had to return Sarah to Earth. The
Doctor didn't really like this, as he had grown fond of Sarah Jane and
viewed her as his best friend. However, a summons was a summons-he
had to go. They both were visibly sad about the fact that Sarah had
to leave. On Gallifrey, he defeated the Master who was now falling
apart because the Master fails at keeping a body for more than a
season. After that, he traveled alone for a while. Eventually, the
Doctor landed on a planet inhabited by the Sevateem, a warrior-like
tribe. On an earlier visit, the Doctor accidentally imprinted the
Sevateem’s powerful computer with his own mind, resulting in the
computer having multiple personalities (just roll with it, it's Doctor
Who). After curing the computer, one of the Sevateem, Leela, decided
to travel with him. The relationship between the Doctor and Leela was
like that of Henry Higgens and Eliza Doolittle. The Doctor was
determined to help 'civilize' Leela. The two got along quite well,
despite the Doctor's discouraging of the way Leela tended to kill
their enemies instead of simply incapacitate them. They traveled
together, visiting places from Victorian London to the moons of
Saturn. On one of those trips, they acquired the robot dog K-9.

After a lot of travels, the Doctor returns to Gallifrey and declares
himself Lord President. This is part of a scheme to save Gallifrey
from an attack by the Sontarans. While he holds position as the Lord
President, the Doctor starts acting more power-mad and tyrannical.
It's all a ploy, of course, but the fact that he had the potential to
be as power-mad and tyrannical as previous Lord Presidents has
definitely turned the Doctor off of positions of power for himself and
just for everybody else. After saving the planet and defeating the
Sontarans, Leela and K-9 decided to stay on Gallifrey. The Doctor
consoled himself by making K-9 Mark II. The White Guardian summoned
the Doctor so he could assemble the segments of the Key of Time.
Together with Romana, the two traveled across the universe and
assembled the Key, then promptly disassembled it to escape the wrath
of the Black Guardian. Romana regenerated and continued to travel with
the Doctor. His travels with Romana are interesting: she was his
equal, able to rattle off an equation as fast as he was. The two had
a nice rapport, exchanging witty banter at the blink of an eye. This
definitely helped the Doctor loosen up a little bit.

The two traveled through time with K-9. An interesting note is that
despite the fact that Romana wanted to stay with the Doctor, he's
definite about returning her to Gallifrey when she gets a summons. He
may hate the Time Lords stuffiness and trappings of power, but he
listens when they call. Eventually, they picked up Adric, a new
companion. The three traveled in E-Space, a parallel universe.
Eventually, Romana and K-9 stayed behind to help liberate the Tharil,
a race enslaved by humanity. This obviously is hard on the Doctor, and
yet he lets her go. The Doctor and Adric decide to travel on...AND
THEN WHOOPS, EDENSPHERE HAPPENS.
