CHARACTER NAME: Bartz Klauser
SERIES: Final Fantasy V
RESERVED: Yup!
WISHLIST: Seems so!
PERSONALITY: Bartz is a wanderer at heart and he's happiest when he's on the road. He has no personal aims or ambitions, wanting only to live happily as a vagrant and discover the world around him. The only thing that really gives him anything resembling a sense of direction (in a metaphorical sense, anyway. His actual sense of direction isn't too bad) is his strong sense of justice. He rights injustice where he sees it and actively helps those who can't help themselves however he can. He has difficulty ignoring the distress of others and goes out of his way to help and protect those around him.
He makes friends easily, being cheerful and helpful and mostly reliable, but while he's certainly friendly he's not immediately sociable. He doesn't start conversations with most people unless he has something to say, still being more used to travelling with just a chocobo than with people. He also doesn't form genuine attachments as easily as he seems to, while he's friendly to everyone there's only a select few people he'd really consider friends rather than acquaintances. These few friendships have generally been forged by battle or hardship and these people are the only ones with even the slightest chance of getting him to remain in one place for an extended period of time. Even then, he'd quickly start to resent anyone who kept him in one place for two long.
He's no genius but he's no idiot either. He's simple and tends not to read too much into people's intentions, being more than happy to view the world in black and white. He's easy to trick, not thinking about much more than what he sees right ahead of him, and he doesn't always think too hard when he doesn't see a good reason to. Aside from this, though, he's got a lot of common sense and very rarely lets his sense of passion overcame his sense of reason - he stopped Galuf from rushing into a dangerous situation even though he knew it would a friend of theirs would die there because he knew there was nothing they could do. This isn't to say he's capable of shrugging anything off or being pragmatic about everything - the loss of Lix, in particular, struck him hard.
He doesn't really have much of a sense of shame, being happy to tell people how attractive he finds that pirate who he (at the time) thinks is male or to accept that a 14 year old girl can outstrength him. And he has about four canon non-dancer job-related ridiculous dance scenes. This makes him either a source of amusement or (more likely) constant second hand embarrassment to everyone around him, He rarely takes insults personally unless they're in really, really poor taste and doesn't object to being singled out and made fun of. Hell, if it's likely to make the people around him laugh he pretty much encourages it. He doesn't really take himself seriously at all.
He also dislikes heights. A lot. He's grown more used to dragons and chocobos and airships but is still happy to have both feet on solid ground.
TIMELINE: Post-game.
BACKGROUND: Time passed and Dorgann settled in the small, isolated town of Lix. He married a young woman named Stella and she bore him a single son.
Except for a single incident, a game that ultimately resulted in his falling from a rooftop in the middle of the night and having to cling for his life until morning, Bartz' life in Lix was fairly unremarkable until he was six. He stayed with his mother, helping her to keep the house during his father's long journeys away from the town, had friends who he played with. Normal kid stuff. But Stella had never really been a healthy woman and in the years since giving birth her health had deteriorated further. Though her condition had started to improve it suddenly worsened again, taking her life. With nothing left for them in Lix but grief, Dorgan took his son with him when he next set out.
Time passed and, as young boys generally tend to do, Bartz grew into a young man. He rescued a small chocobo from monsters and eventually befriended him, calling him Boko. They grew up as friends and brothers, both following Dorgann on his journeys around the world. But Bartz wasn't the only one who was getting older. Despite his son's urging him to give up his travels for the save of his failing health, Dorgann continued to wander until a simple cold that he ignored became worse and worse. Eventually, the illness took his life. On his deathbed, he made Bartz promise to continue to journey around the world.
So he did. Until the wind stopped.
Some years after Bartz met Lenna and Galuf, a pretty young woman and an old man suffering from amnesia. The circumstances were hardly ideal, a meteorite falling had drawn Bartz' attention and while investigating he came across Lenna unconscious and being attacked by monsters. He drove the monsters away. Soon after they came across Galuf when investigating a strange sound coming from the meteor. He remembered nothing but when Lenna mentioned her mission to investigate the nearby Wind Shrine he felt like that was where he needed to be. Bartz wished them well and continued on his journey.
But he couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen and when Boko expressed the same dread he returned, finding them in danger once again and rescuing them. Deciding that his father would have wanted him to find out what was wrong with the wind crystal (or possibly, as Galuf suggested, just looking for excuses to spend time with the beautiful Lenna), he chose to go with them. But there was a small problem. The Wind Shrine was over water and now that the wind had stopped sailing was difficult. Undeterred, they travelled onward until they discovered a ship that could move without the wind. Unfortunately, the ship was in the hands of pirates. The three of them attempted to take control of it but were apprehended by the captain, Faris, and imprisoned. But after seeing a necklace that Lenna was wearing Faris suddenly changed his mind, agreeing to take them to the wind shrine and introducing them to Syldra, his sea-beast companion who moved the ship through the water.
They reached the wind shrine moments too late and a near-possessed King Tycoon, Lenna's father, urged them to protect the remaining crystals before vanishing. The four of them were granted the essences of Wind, Water, Fire and Earth before the wind crystal shattered. Now responisble for the fate of the world, they set out to find and protect the remaining crystals.
Unfortunately luck was against them. The rulers of Walse and Karnak, the homes of the Water and Fire crystals were unwilling to heed them until too late and one by one the remaining crystals were lost along with Syldra and Faris' ship and Karnak Castle. But all was not completely bad. Faris and Lenna discovered that they were long lost sisters (also that Faris was a girl) and swore to protect each other so not to lose each other again. Upon seeing Cid, an inventor from Karnak, reunited with Mid, his grandson a little of Galuf's memory returned to him. He was able to tell his companions that the foe they were facing was a warlock named Exdeath and that he was from a different world. Eventually, they made their way to the Floating Ronka Ruins with the help of Cid and Mid to protect the last crystal at all costs.
Well, not quite all costs. When what stood between them and protecting the last crystal was Faris and Lenna's possessed father the girls could not bear to see him harmed. All seemed to be lost until another meteorite fell and a young girl appeared from it to free King Tycoon from Exdeath's spell. Galuf instantly recognized the girl as Krile, his grandaughter, and his memory flooded back to him.
Sadly, the joyful reunion was cut short when Exdeath destroyed the final crystal, freeing himself. Krile and Galuf returned to their own world alone to fight him, refusing to allow Bartz, Lenna or Faris to go with them because there would be no way to return. But the three of them decided that Galuf was one of them and that they were going to aid him in his fight against Exdeath, a fight that would not have had to happen had they succeeded at their original task. With the aid of Cid and Mid once again, they made their way to the second world.
On the second world they were attacked and help prisoner by Exdeath and used as leverage against Galuf and his armies. Galuf came to their rescue but when Exdeath set up a barrier around his castle the four of them were expelled across the world. They mkade their way to the village of moogles and were eventually rescued by Krile with the aid of her faithful moogle and wind drake. However, the journey was harsh on the already injured drake and without dragon grass he was in great danger of dying. Unwilling to allow this to happen, they set out once again in search of dragon grass. On this journey they passed through the town of Quelb. Here Bartz Told Galuf his father's name and in turn Galuf told him the truth about who his father was. He was shocked by the news but only more determined to succeed on their quest.
They returned with the dragon grass and the drake recovered. They were at a loss for what to do next until Krile revealed that the sage Ghido has spoken to her and summonned them. They set off to speak with him but as they neared his cave it was sunk below the water. Once again out of options, they went to help King Xezat, a friend of Galuf's and of Dorgann's, with his own plans. Xezat's plan was successful in destroying the barrier around Exdeath's castle but cost him his life. While Galuf mourned the loss of his dear friend, they took a submarine below the sea to search for Ghido.
They finally found him. In between jabs at Bartz' intelligence, Ghido explained Exdeath's nature to them and gave them the key they needed to enter the Forest of Moore. They went there, ready to face Exdeath for the last time.
For one of them, it would be.
Exdeath was ready for them once again, trapping them and slowly torturing them to death. Krile interfered once again but stood no chance against Exdeath, who was only too happy to turn his attention to her instead. Galuf would not allow his granddaughter to be attacked, breaking free of his imprisonment and fighting Exdeath alone. Even when beaten to within an inch of his life by Exdeath's most powerful spells he refused to even flinch until the warlock was forced to retreat.
But his victory came at a great cost. With his friends surrounding him, desperately trying to restore him with medicine and magic, he eventually passed on. Galuf passed his place as a warrior of light, along with all of the experience he'd gained in battle, on to Krile.
There was little time to mourn. The warriors of light travelled on to Exdeath's castle, intending to kill him. And kill him they were sure that they did. But when the remaining crystals shattered the worlds merged. The warriors found themselves outside Tycoon. Believing that they were victorious, they allowed themselves to celebrate. Faris returned the the life of Princess Sarisa after so many years away from it and a grand celebration was held. But when Krile became apprehensive Bartz, who had been trying to look out for her since her grandfather's death, took her away from the celebrations where they went to seek out Boko and look to try and find the cause of her unexplainable anxiety.
And then they fell in a hole.
Thankfully, Faris rescued them after deciding that the life of princess Sarisa really wasn't that great. She threw down a rope and helped them to climb out. Krile complained of a splinter but it was son forgotten. The three of them went to seek out Ghido, feeling that he would probably know what was going on best. But Krile's splinter revealed itself as Exdeath in disguise and, using the powers he had gained from the merging of the worlds, he removed several towns from existence. Amongst these was Tycoon, where Lenna remained.
Once again, there was no time for grief. The three remaining light warriors headed out in search of tablets that would allow them to use the twelve legendary weapons. They ran into Lenna once again, possessed by a demon from the void. Her father's wind drake came to their aid, expelling the demon from her body at the cost of its own life. It would later return to Lenna as the summoned monster Pheonix. Exdeath sent more places to the void and amongst them was Lix.
Bartz was unhappy. Momentarily forgetting his fear of heights, he flew the ariship across the world at great speed with no real destination in mind. When he calmed down, the four of them resolved to put aside their grief in the name of getting rid of Exdeath once and for all. They gathered the remaining weapons, fought their way though the rift and faced Exdeath one final time. After a long, difficult battle, he fell.
And yet the void remained. Exdeath had been felled but the damage had been done and the void would soon envelop the world.
But the crystals remained. Not only in the shards that the warriors carried but in the hearts of all humans. As long as man had hope and was courageous, devoted and passionate the crystals would never completely be destroyed. Through Krile's hope, Faris' courage, Lenna's devotion and Bartz's passion the world and the crystals were reborn. Urged on by the spirits of their fallen companions, the warriors of light returned victorious to the world that they saved.
For the next year, Bartz continued to travel. At first he travelled with his friends, visiting the places that had been lost to the void with a newly found appreciation for them that only loss can bring. When they left for their own homes he returned briefly to Lix but soon missed the road. Without his faithful Chocobo, who had stated a family in his absence, he hit the road once again.
He returned to the forest of Moore with the other warriors of light a year after Galuf's death. As Krile left flowers by the tree where he'd given up his life for them he, Faris and Lenna leapt down from the branches above to remind her that she wasn't alone.
ABILITIES:
Though the crystal shards that allowed the characters to switch between jobs were returned to the world at the end of Final Fantasy V they kept their access to the original 'freelancer' job. The freelancer has access to the abilities of other jobs that have been learned. I am stealing the format for this from Krile's app because honestly I am otherwise unsure what to do about abilities. Only two ! Abilities can be used at once and they'll need to be relearned. Passive abilities (without a !) are always there.
-Dancer
-!Flirt - Bartz can charm enemies to make them forget about attacking.
-!Dance - Bartz thinks he can dance (he's right).
-Equip Ribbons - This skill name is deceptive! It says ribbons but it covers all dancer-exclusive equipment. So Bartz has the ability to wear dresses, shiny shoes and tiaras. And not feel self-conscious about it at all. Second hand embarrassment for all!
-Bard
-!Hide - This one is also kind of obvious! Also I picked the best jobs to use clearly.
-Equip Harps - Because the dresses and ribbons weren't quite ridiculous enough. He can also equip harps! And somehow hurt people with musical notes.
-!Sing - Barz sings songs to cheer others on.
-Beastmaster
-!Tame - Tames animals and monsters!
-!Control - Bosses animals and monsters around. It's less effective if they're strong and actively fighting the control.
-Equip Whips - Kinky.
-!Catch - Bartz wants to be the very best like no-one ever was can capture animals and monsters and release them later to attack foes. Again, it doesn't work so well against stronger things.
-He's survived on the road for years so he's pretty good at being outside and not dead. He knows enough first aid to deal with most emergencies that you'd run into when wandering around in a world full of monsters, can generally tell 'is this poisonous', can make food that's edible (if not great) from minimal ingredients and, you know, miscellaneous outdoor survival-type skills.
-He. Um. Can use normal weapons as well as the ones mentioned here. It's just not as funny.
-He has mastered the piano! All others quake in fear before his superhuman keyboard manipulation skill! (No seriously that's how the game words it. FFV is special.)
GAME INFO
EDENSPHERE NAME: Butts Lix
BIRTHDAY LOG: Yes!
DREAM: Lix. He didn't know what but something here was called Lix. That name was all he could think of while the trees moved and rustled as the night wind blew through them, their leaves reducing the light of the moon to small fragments of light on the grass. There was a gravestone. He couldn't quite read it, or maybe he couldn't quite comprehend the letters. Maybe it was just too dark to see them right. He really wasn't sure. He drew a thumb across the letters - the smart, well-carved ones at the top of the stone and the crude, almost unreadable ones below them. How he recognized one set of letters as difficult to read when he couldn't read either wasn't something he thought to question. He shuffled his feet a little, fidgeting to stay warm in the night air and listening to the sound of the grass shifting beneath his feet.
He wasn't here alone. He couldn't tell if his companion was a man or a woman but some part of him knew without a doubt that they were a friend. He - she? - mumbled something under his breath. The words were as unclear as the writing on the stone had been but the mournful tone of his friend's voice was clear. He placed a hand on his friend's shoulder, trying to comfort him, but the friend just glanced at it for a few seconds and then brushed it away. His friend said something else incomprehensible and shook his head, walking away. He followed through a town, its streets deserted at this hour, unsure whether he felt safe and comfortable or like he was being suffocated. He was fairly sure those feelings were relatively incompatible with each other, anyway, and he was struggling to work out how he could feel both long after they'd entered an inn of some sort and he'd retreated into unfamiliar blankets. He didn't sleep.
Eventually the sun rose. More friends woke up, a woman and an old man. He said something, he wasn't sure what - it was a bizarre feeling not knowing what words were coming out of his own mouth - but he was fairly sure he was complaining about feeling tired still. He wanted to complain about feeling tired, anyway. The friend he'd spoken to last night laughed, saying something that - even without being able to comprehend his speech - he could tell was a jab at his masculinity. He just laughed.
He felt a little better once they started walking. Still tired - he really should have slept - but better.
JOURNAL SAMPLE: Born, huh? Only just born. Dunno why but I figured I'd be smaller when I was just born.
Well, makes about as much sense as anything else does. Guess I should. I dunno. I'll try to find a job or something, I guess. Starving doesn't sound all too great.
Oh, hey. Right. I'm Lix. Or something. Anyone know a good way to get that being-born-gunk out of your ears? It's kinda starting to bug me.
ASPIRATIONS: First things first, Bartz is, despite his easy-going nature, going to have to face a whole lot of his personal problems to be able to deal with Edensphere. First he's going to have to learn to deal with his irrational hate of staying in houses. Because that's going to get difficult quick. What with there being houses and all. Getting over the dislike for being stuck in one place is also a priority, though the changing nature of the wilderness will at least help with that. I think he'd do okay with these problems at first but then be back to square one if he ever regained the memories associated with them. The big tricky thing will be his fear of heights. Because that's not really going anywhere, I think it'd be OOC for him to get over it entirely, and NOW YOU ARE STUCK ON A GIANT TREE HAVE FUN. I'm looking forward to playing out all of this.
Bartz himself doesn't have too many aspirations. He's entirely about the journey rather than the destination and is more likely to allow himself to get dragged along with other people than to try to get anything structured done himself. Left to his own devices his aims would probably consist of 'oh hey the wilderness changed again IT'S EXPLORING TIME YEAH'. He does have the essence of passion/knowledge/curiosity/translation issues and a natural love of learning things so when the paragraph above stops bothering him so much he'll probably want to try to figure things out. But it'll be more for the sake of learning than aiming to actually do/change anything and his methods'll be messy and unstructured.
Making friends isn't actually that much of a priority for him IC (though OOC I would kind of like it), he's just as happy to be left on his own as he is to hang around with others, but it's likely to happen. He's kind of the type who gathers friends easily.
