CHARACTER NAME: Yuu Kanda
SERIES: D.Gray-Man
RESERVED: Y
WISHLIST: Y
PERSONALITY: Kanda is rather difficult to understand, and that's putting it optimistically.

His attitude defaults to unsocial and inhospitable. Kanda prefers his own company, and he lacks basic etiquette and social skills, coming off childishly stubborn at times. When with others, he often comes off temperamental and maybe vaguely amused if it's at someone else's expense. He takes his duty as an Exorcist seriously to a fault, frequently outwardly expressing lack of regard of others and their lives, justifying himself by declaring the presumed inevitability of frequent death. His fuse is short, and he lacks self-control in regard to his temper, giving into the impulse to explode with rage, even reaching for his weapon in response to being addressed by his first name. Even if he's not deliberately rude, he has a tendency to come off callous. At best, tolerant. Once he's set on something, getting through to him can be a real challenge, though it should be noted that fellow Exorcist Lenalee seems to be the only one that can with relative ease.

However, he's not all brute and anger. For one, although he doesn't seem to particularly like working in groups, he can very efficiently. Also, details of his past linger, which he prefers to keep concealed. For the most part, he seems accepting of what he is, and any hints of bother can only be found in the rare grimace as he doesn't really grieve. Should someone who knows of his past express remorse, he'll defensively dismiss it. His behavior suggests that he doesn't feel a sort of righteousness toward the Order but that his drive, as intense as it is, stems from (one who is only known as:) "that person." This personal crusade in addition to the effects of his power draining his life could possibly be the reason he's so adamant about keeping people at bay. In fact, it seems the people more persistent about befriending him are more likely to receive the explosive portion of his temper. Interestingly, where Kanda's likely to loudly lash out at a comrade,
an enemy hitting a sensitive spot seems more likely to induce a deathly silent reaction.

Kindnesses aren't completely lost on Kanda, though they're few and far between, if not displayed in a completely ass backward manner. Actions speak louder than words, and for as much as Kanda has verbally assessed barriers between himself and other Exorcists/Order members, his displays have contradicted his words: he's thrown himself in the line of fire to protect others (in one case, even after directly stating he wouldn't do that); he's even had his moments of offering very backhanded encouragement. Suffice it to say that somewhere under those very thick and very cold layers encasing him (like trying to dig your way under the Great Wall of China with a spoon), glimmers of morality and camaraderie are present.

He also really likes soba.
TIMELINE: Chapter 194
BACKGROUND: ((SPOILERS! At this point, there's really no avoiding it.))

Kanda literally began life at the age of nine. Part of the Synthetic Disciple Project, he was born in a lab in the Asian Branch of the Black Order. He was, essentially, a test-tube baby, though he was able to speak immediately and had the mentality of a nine-year-old from the start. The intention of this project was to not only create Exorcists who could wield Anti-Akuma weapons made of Innocence but could quickly recover from injuries as well. The other born of this project was a boy named Alma. From the very start, Kanda was an ill-tempered child and lashed out at Alma's attempts to befriend him. However, the two of them were subjects to frequent and very painful tests in an attempt to get them to synchronize with Innocence. Eventually, Kanda let down his walls, and the two did become very close.

During this time, Kanda frequently experienced peculiar dreams and visions of fields of lotus flowers and an unknown woman. Of course, he didn't know what they were and even thought the vague hallucination of a woman might be a ghost. In actuality, these were memories that were not his own. In order to synchronize with the Innocence, the synthetic disciples were fused with the brain cells of previously fallen Exorcists.

Fearing what may happen if Kanda were to fully obtain those memories, the head of the project ordered him to be terminated. Alma overheard this, and took Kanda while he was unconscious and tried to flee. However, the attempt was halted by the Order's elite enforcement team, the Crow. Kanda was terminated but not before his mind slipped to the Exorcist whose cells he was fused with, driving him to near insanity.

However, the procedure fails, and Kanda reawakens to images of the woman as well as his Innocence coming to him. He uses it to escape and finds another Exorcist, Marie, severely injured, who he decides to take with him. Unknown to him, during an attempt to save Kanda, Alma also synchronized with his Innocence, though it drove him to insanity. Kanda finds Alma, who has killed the entire project team and Crow members. Alma then turns his attack on Kanda and Marie, determined to kill even Kanda. Kanda is stunned off guard at first, but the memories of the mysterious woman and the strong desire to see her give him the will to live, and so he counterattacks (and therefore, I am 99.9% sure that she is "that person" at this time).

It's recorded that Kanda hacked away at Alma until the boy couldn't regenerate anymore. For the next nine years, Kanda believed he had killed his friend, though the reality was that Alma was kept alive in a coma like state.

The project was discontinued. Nevertheless, because of it, Kanda is considered a Second Exorcist. Some of the more notable traits left by this project is the tattoo on his chest that enables him to recover quickly from even severe injury and the sight of a lotus flower--an illusion, as he was told by Zhu Chan (the sword smith that would later forge Kanda's Innocence into the Anti-Akuma Weapon, Mugen) that he would see forever. In fact, over the years, the flower has multiplied so that he sees several.

Taken in as a pupil under General Froi Tiedoll (who regards him with fatherly like affection, which Kanda hates), Kanda serves the Order as an Exorcist. During this time, he works with teammates Noise Marie and Daisya Barry, whom he can tolerate to a certain extent (more so Marie). He also meets another Exorcist Lenalee, who over the years, purposely hides with Kanda whenever Central Head Malcom C. Leverrier is present. He also meets the apprentice of Bookman, Lavi, who's quick to make an impression as he consistently refers to Kanda as 'Yuu' much in the same manner as Alma had, which trigger's Kanda's rage button.

Exorcists are most frequently sent on missions where supernatural phenomena occur. In such cases, the missions are most likely linked to Innocence. It is the Exorcists duty to obtain them before the Akuma do and hand it over to the Earl. During this time, the war was more like a race. The Exorcist searched for the Innocence to keep it from the Earl and also possibly find more compatible users. The Earl wished to keep it from the Order and being used against his armies. Ultimately, they were both searching for the "heart," a specific piece of Innocence that if fallen into the hands of the Earl and destroyed, would destroy the other one-hundred and nine pieces scattered across the world.

Fast forward to 18-year-old Kanda. The war starts taking an even darker turn though around the time he first meets another Exorcist by the name of Allen Walker. At first, Allen is mistaken as an Akuma, and Kanda attacks him, but it is soon discovered that he is not and that he was sent by General Cross Marian (the mistake due to a curse the boy has). Like most people he first meets, Kanda regards him rudely. As Allen soon learns more of Kanda's hostile and insensitive behavior and Kanda hates his ever kind and righteous attitude, the two continue to clash.

Nevertheless, they're paired together by Komui Lee (the Supervisor of the Black Order) on a mission to investigate the Ghost of Mater. As suspected, there is Innocence in the area, and rather than there being a ghost as rumored, there's a doll, powered to "life" by the Innocence. The doll has a strong attachment to an elder human companion, and they don't wish to be parted. Instead they request to wait until the human dies, but Kanda is impatient and would rather take it without their consent. However, Allen can't bear to do so and insists they adhere to their wish, much to Kanda's annoyance.

During such time, they're attacked by a Level Two Akuma. Allen fights it, though his power runs out, and although Kanda had told him prior to the mission that he would not save him, that he'd leave him behind if he became a hindrance, Kanda does the opposite, deflecting an attack aimed at Allen, then the two proceed to destroy the Akuma.

Kanda parts with Allen and immediately proceeds to his next mission (he's able to leave the hospital after a few days due to his ability to recover rapidly). The Earl has sent Akuma as well as Noahs (descendants of Noah, with power from dark matter like the Akuma have but much stronger and capable of free thought) to kill Generals while in search of the heart. Exorcists are then sent off to find the Generals that lead their team and bring them back to the Black Order Headquarters. Teamed with Noise Marie and Daisya Barry, Kanda and the other two go off in search of Tiedoll.

Though their mission is a success, they do not arrive as a trio when Barry is killed by Noah, Tyki Mikk. Tiedoll, however, does not immediately agree to return to HQ, insistent upon finding new disciples. As such, Kanda and Marie agree to escort him, and the three travel off to Edo, where another team is searching for General Cross Marian.

The three find other group being attacked by Noahs and even the Earl himself. Kanda arrives in time to save Lenalee and Chaoji from Tyki Mikk. Even Allen, who had previously been missing appears to take on the Earl, but then the Earl and the Noah's disappear. They hardly have time to regroup and recover when Lenalee is taken into a mysterious portal, quickly followed by Kanda, Allen, Chaoji, Lavi, and another Exorcist named Krory. They soon learn that they're trapped in Noah's Ark, where they're told there is no escape and that the Ark is crumbling in self-destruction. However, Tyki Mikk reappears, saying there is an escape but they have to find him and fight him for a chance at freedom.

The Ark contains a multitude of doors leading to different rooms, which appear as completely different terrains. During their search, they find another Noah, Skin Boric, in one of the rooms. As Kanda informs them that this Noah had been following his group, he insists on fighting the Noah by himself. When his fellow Exorcists don't wish to leave him, he even turns Mugen's First Illusion power against them to get them to leave, though he does promise Lenalee that he'll return.

The fight itself is intense, and Kanda expresses his doubts about the Noah's alleged immortality. Ultimately, Kanda proves victorious, though he has to draw the power of the Third Illusion from Mugen, which absorbs his life for power. The battle proves so intense that Mugen is shattered (though it is not completely destroyed, as the complete destruction of an Anti-Akuma Weapon would mean their wielder could no longer be an Exorcist). These factors on top of the heavy amount of injuries he received during the battle leaves Kanda stuck in the room while the Ark crumbles.

Unbeknown to Kanda, the others continuation of their journey has also proved successful. Not only does Allen reunite with General Cross Marian, but he has the ability the restore the Ark and control it. This allows Kanda to "revive," and he regroups with the others.

They return to HQ, and officials from Central join soon after, specifically Leverrier and his lackey, Inspector Howard Link. In addition to wishing to investigate the Ark, which contains the "egg" used to create Akuma, Leverrier has been sent to interrogate General Cross Marian (who had previously been out of contact with the Order for years without a trace) as well as Allen's ability to control the Ark. During this time, there is an attack on HQ led by Noah, Lulubell, along with many Akuma and skulls (another set of minions of the Earl, noted by their heads being skulls) to reclaim the egg for themselves. Mugen still isn't repaired, but it appears some of the other Exorcists along with the Generals prove victorious. At least until one of the Akuma evolves into Level 4, which Bookman notes has never been seen before. Komui then calls for an evacuation.

The Level 4 is after Komui and Hevlaska, and even without Mugen, Kanda uses regular swords to protect them. Alongside Lavi and Allen, he fights against the Level 4, and when Allen--the only one of the three that still has Anti-Akuma Weaponry--stands against an attack from the Level 4, both Kanda and Lavi grab onto his sword to hold it off. Once Lenalee is battle ready, victory is ensured, particularly when the Generals find them.

Although they won the battle, it is decided that Headquarters must relocate. It proves to be a challenge of the annoying variety when various potions have odd effects on the Order members--Kanda, himself, being shrunk into a child. Even more so when a vitamin gone wrong zombifies the members and is infectious. Nevertheless, they manage to pull through and the move is successful.

At the new Headquarters comes the mysterious death/disappearance of General Cross Marian. Shortly after, the Exorcists are told the truth of the lost 14th Noah's memories residing within Allen Walker, using his body as a host (which is why he could control the Ark). They are given an order that should Allen show signs of being taken over by the 14th, they are to kill him as he's a threat to the Order, and Kanda regards him even more coldly.

When Order members are arrested in Paris (the accusation that they were the mysterious criminal, Thief G) during an investigation, Kanda, Allen, Inspector Link (who's been assigned to watch over Allen), and Marie are sent after them. They soon discover an entire jail filled with alleged Thief Gs, but the truth of the matter is that the real G is an Innocence user who can possess bodies, making him difficult to catch. Nevertheless, when Thief G leaves a message for where his next attack will be, the Exorcists go after him. Although they do not catch him during the confrontation, Thief G bursts into tears and wails (they assume over the fright caused by being stabbed by Allen's sword, though the weapon won't actually hurt someone free of dark matter), and Marie is able to trace the sounds to an orphanage.

They discover Thief G is a young boy named Timothy, and since he is compatible with the Innocence, Kanda informs the caretakers they'll be taking Timothy to HQ, much to the young boy's dismay. Their argument is interrupted by an Akuma attack, who have placed a barrier that disables some of Allen's abilities. It's noted the barrier can only be passed through by Akuma, keeping everyone trapped inside and also locking out those on the outside.

Among the Akuma is another Level 4, which Kanda, Allen, and Marie go after. Link and Timothy battle against the other lower leveled ones. During the fight, Allen impales both himself and the Level 4 with his sword, using his attack Clown Crown. The idea was that the attack would only hurt the Akuma, yet it also has an effect that causes the 14th to start taking over. Rather than killing Allen as per the orders, Kanda attacks the Level 4 and screams at Allen, calling him, "Bean Sprout" (his default insult for Allen) to make him come to. The Akuma are defeated and the barrier is lifted. Timothy also agrees to go along with newfound enthusiasm.

Back at HQ, there are new Third Exorcists that are half-Akuma, as created by Central. During that time, Kanda is asked to visit the Asian Branch by Zhu, the creator of Mugen. Kanda goes, but he first meets with Bak Chan, who is reminded of the synthetic disciple project Kanda's faced and wants to apologize, much to Kanda's annoyance. Other Exorcists enter the Asian Branch to find Kanda, as they've been assigned a new mission. When Zhu arrives, he asks Kanda if he can still see the flower.

Later, while on a mission in Jordan, Kanda comes face-to-face with the Noah Wisely. Wisely has telepathic powers and immediately throws Kanda off guard by asking about Alma. He then crushes Kanda's head. Kanda resurrects inside the American branch, laying atop the chamber that contains Alma and sustains his comatose state. There are other Noah present as well as Order members (who are trapped by the Noah Cyril), and soon enough, Allen is led to the scene by Tyki.

Once Kanda fully comes to, he fights alongside Allen. Much to the other Order members surprise, when he sees Alma, he doesn't recognize him, and when informed, he simply states that Alma's dead. Wisely's intention to awaken Alma is revealed and to do so, he uses his Demon Eye power to stir old memories from both Alma and Kanda's minds. Allen is caught in the process, watching the detailed and vivid scenes of Kanda and Alma's childhood unravel around him. Unable to take anymore, Allen breaks free from the mind trap by activating his Innocence and punching the Demon Eye across Kanda's forehead, which also breaks it. Nevertheless, Alma has already been awakened.

ABILITIES: Kanda is a skilled swordsman. He's as fast as he is strong. He's also rather skilled with martial arts.

The process of synchronizing users with Innocence was violent and would kill a normal person, so the synthetic disciples were designed to regenerate from even the most severe injuries as well as have super strength. The process isn't an instantaneous one, but he can still recover much quicker than a normal (for example, he's only in the hospital for three days when he should be there for several months). He can also resurrect from death, but he's not immortal. The tattoo on his chest is tied with his ability to regenerate/resurrect. Not all the details are clear, but it does appear to be tied to a preset lifespan and that the more the tattoo expands, the less life Kanda has.

As an Exorcist, Kanda is compatible with Innocence. His is forged into a sword called Mugen. Kanda's Anti-Akuma Weapon is an equipment type, meaning that the weapon is separate from his body. With Mugen, when Kanda activates his Innocence, he can perform the following:

Underworld Insects, Ichigen (First Illusion) - When Kanda swings Mugen and calls this attack, an assault of creatures are released in a small group that crash into his opponent and consume/destroy them.

Nigento (Second Illusion Sword) - Calling this power draws an energy from Mugen that engulfs it and also curls around his back, coating Mugen's sheath in the same fashion, giving the effect that he is wielding two swords.

Hakka Touro (Eight Flower Praying Mantis) - This ability can only be used after Kanda's engaged Nigento. It enables him to swiftly cut his opponent eight times.

Shouka (Sublimate) - This ability activates Kanda's tattoo, serving to power up so that he can use Sangenshiki (Three Illusions).

Sangenshiki (Three Illusions) - Mugen absorbs some of Kanda's life, and in return the power it grants him significantly increases his strength as well as speed.

EDENSPHERE NAME: Rise
BIRTHDAY LOG: Yes, please.
DREAM: In the distance, an unseen pendulum ticked in perfect time.

The sensation resembled something along the lines of being encased in a pure black ice chamber.

When his eyes opened, he tilted his head back, and a faint pink glow broke the darkness from above. He exhaled, and bubbles lifted in front of his face. When he tried to inhale, he couldn't.

Propelling himself upward, the light grew closer and closer. With a shatter, he broke through the surface, streams falling from his form and splashing back into the water. Fluffy clouds accented the crystal sky above, though even with the pool so far beneath him, the sun was still out of reach.

The cries of battle resounded nearby, and his attention sharply turned to the monsters. He held his weapon, and in one swift movement, he rushed past them. A streak of light and they're destroyed.

"...right about then, even if a little late..."

He landed on the pavement with a click of his heels. Sheathing his weapon, he ascended the stone staircase that led to the black cathedral. The doors opened, revealing a crowd of smiling faces. How can anyone smile in the middle of a funeral?

"...would arrive and throw a sour look around the room..."

Either they all noticed him, or nobody did. He didn't care to find out and swept past the hall into a large empty corridor.

From the slight crevices along the stone walls, the ends of thin vines peeked through. They started out like slender webs, but with each passing second, they expanded into thick and twisted knots, concealing any hint that he was inside. He came to a stop, scowling at the floor where long blades of grass grew around his feet.

Pink buds lit up one by one all across the meadow like street lamps in the night. They bloomed into vibrant lotus flowers. As they expanded to their fullest, the glow started to fade. The petals withered, crumbling and slowly drifting to the ground.

"Until the last petal falls," she said. "It's just an illusion."

The ticking stopped.

MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS, NOSY BASTARDS

ASPIRATIONS: Kanda has misleading memory mindfuckery potential, and I think that would be fun to play with. Since he's an unsociable character, I've found the best way to get him to interact with others is to put him in face-to-face situations, which means tagging open logs or posting them myself.

He would be more interested in his own personal mysteries rather than the Sphere's, so he probably won't get into that too much. That's not to say he won't absolutely, just that he won't actively pursue trying to uncover it. Also, he's no shounen hero, so he won't righteously assert himself as a productive citizen. He does, however, have a sense of duty and a sense of right and wrong, so I think he may eventually make a good Guard or something like that.

Oh, and I forever volunteer him to be trolled, because there's just nothing not funny about that. ;)
