10 Words to describe your character: resilient, protective, good-natured, casual, guarded, level-headed, friendly, chivalrous, respectful, active

EXTENDED APPLICATION -- PLEASE DO AT LEAST A PARAGRAPH ON EACH OF THESE, UNLESS THEY ARE STATED TO BE OPTIONAL
Personality: Asher is a fairly easy-going kid; he's friendly and sociable without being high-strung. He has a good sense of humor, and even enjoys a well-planned prank once in a while. However, he's a little over-protective when it comes to girls, perhaps because he was raised by his mother. Even though he isn't a stuffy stick-to-the-rules kind of guy, he is generally well behaved and manages to keep out of trouble. Asher likes to hand in his homework on time--but sometimes puts it off until the last moment. He might not like all of his professors, but he does his best to give them the respect they are due as authority figures. He's got a bit of athletic skill, and prefers football to Quidditch. When he goes home for holidays, he likes to play computer games and watch Muggle television programs. However, as he gets older and learns more about the Wizarding world, he's beginning to show more interest in magical subjects and activities.

Strengths: Both magical and personality:
Asher's best subjects are Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts. He loves Charms, because to him it's the most like story magic--he can make things fly, change color, get bigger or smaller. Essentially, it's the fun sort of magic to him. And he has the confidence to make the spells work. As for Defense Against the Dark Arts, Asher thinks that it is the most important subject he is going to learn at Hogwarts. He values it not just because it will help him defend himself, but also because it will help him to protect others. Learning about all the bad that's out there makes him feel more in control.

It takes a lot to shake Asher. He doesn't often lose his temper or his cool. Asher likes to keep a level-head and make decisions about his actions rather than simply reacting. This doesn't mean that he can't act quickly, just that he doesn't act rashly.

Asher is also very good-natured. His motivations are genuine and honorable. He doesn't really do spite and he has little interest in manipulation.

Weaknesses: Both magical and personality:
Asher's weakest subjects are Astronomy and Potions. He thinks that Astronomy is cool enough, but he doesn't really take the class seriously. He's more interested in looking at the stars than actually learning the material. Likewise, he thinks that Potions is an interesting class. Unfortunately, he lacks the attention to detail required to succeed in the discipline.

He has an inability to determine when a female really needs his assistance and when he's overstepping his bounds. Asher will try to intervene in couples' spats, even when it's not his business, just to be sure that the girl is ok. Likewise, if he witnesses any kind of disagreement, he's likely to jump in to the defense of the girl--without bothering to find out who was in the wrong.

Asher also has difficulty opening up to other people and trusting them. When he was very young it was just his mother, his brother, and him--and he got used to the small, insular circle of trust. Even now that he's in a stable and comfortable home, he still clings to some of that guardedness. He makes friends easily, but he's unlikely to truly confide in people.

Fears: Asher gets totally freaked out if he steps in the muck at the bottom of ponds. He can't go swimming in places where there is no way to bypass the decaying leaves and gunk near the shore. In conjunction with this, he is scared of leeches. Once he stepped in a nest of them, and screamed the whole way back to the salt box.

On a more serious note, Asher is terrified of losing his mother. She was the only person he could count on when he was growing up, and he's very close to her. The thought of something bad happening to her is unbearable.

History: Asher was born in Stoke-on-Trent in February of 1990 to Elizabeth Rose Griffin, a Muggle-born witch. He has no memories of his father. His older brother, Azriel, claims to remember their father, but it's unlikely as the man left their mother shortly before Asher was born. They both learned at an early age not to really ask much about him, as it seemed to upset their mother so much. They moved around quite a bit in the early 90s while Elizabeth worked odd jobs in both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. Then, when Asher was 4 years old, his mother met a man named Simon. After a brief courtship, the two were wed, and Asher and Azriel moved into Simon's house with their mother.

Simon was a nice enough man, and though he wasn't wealthy, he made enough money to provide for the family. He treated the two boys well and did his best to be the father figure they never had. Elizabeth had mostly hidden her magical abilities from the boys, and thus they had no troubles adjusting to their new, more stable, life.

Asher started attending school in Chester, where they now lived. Around the same time, Elizabeth gave birth to a little girl, who they named Shelby. Even though he was no longer the youngest, Asher was excited to be a big brother. He attended Muggle schools, doing quite well, until he received his letter from Hogwarts. Asher's mother didn't seem surprised at all, though Simon was understandably shocked.

When he arrived at Hogwarts, Asher was sorted into Gryffindor, which was just fine by him. It seemed to be a good house, with great mates. He was excited to be doing magic, but his mother also impressed upon him that Hogwarts was still a school--though its curriculum differed greatly from that at his previous schools. So, he tries his best and is even starting to consider his future. At this point, though, it's difficult--because there are just so many things that sound interesting.

Physical Description: At the least, provide base details of build, height, eye/hair colour, and complexion. Asher is a wiry guy and stands at about 5'9", although he's going through a bit of a growth spurt. He'll probably reach 6'1" by the time he's finished growing. He has kinky blond hair, but usually keeps it short so it's not very noticeable. His eyes are blue and he has fair-medium skin tone. Like most teenage boys, he gets blemishes from time to time. Also, he's still kind of bad at shaving.

Why are they in that house? The sorting hat immediately picked up on Asher's chivalrous streak. He's not fearless, but he is willing to stand up for others when it matters. Even though he's not rash or hot-headed, he still follows his heart when it matters.

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE -- PLEASE ENSURE THAT THIS IS IN THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW

Asher chewed on the end of his quill and considered what the other kid had said. He had to get special quills that didn't have the feathery bits on the end, because he always ended up with a mouthful of fluff. After coughing and sputtering enough times, he'd made a point of finding an alternative. Most of his pens back home were chewed up, too. His mother had always told him it was an awful habit--but Asher figured there were much worse habits he could pick up. A few mutilated writing implements weren't such a big deal.

His mother. That pureblood kid had said that their parents knew his mother. This meant that Asher's mother had to have gone to Hogwarts. It was strange, though, that she had never mentioned it to him. She hadn't seemed surprised when he got his letter, now that he looked back on that day. It just seemed odd to him that she wouldn't tell him something so important as this. What else was she keeping from him? He wondered if maybe his father had gone to school here too...

You don't need to know, Asher told himself. His mother had told them once that they were better off not knowing their father--and who would know better than her? Even if he did go to school here, there was no easy way to figure out who he was. His mother was a pretty lady; she had probably dated lots of boys when she was a teenager. He couldn't start asking every student in the school to owl their parents about who his mum dated. That would be absurd.

He heard some of the guys call from across the common room that they were going out to play some ball. Asher glanced down at his History of Magic essay. He had barely made any progress at all. Deciding that it was fruitless, Asher set his quill down. The essay could wait until later; a distraction would be more than welcome at this point. Perhaps he'd ask Azriel for some advice later.
