Wednesday, October 25th. Lunch. mynameisanya December 15 2007, 01:07:20 UTC
Anya munched happily away at the food that was in front of her. She was trying her best to hold onto the utterly happy mood that she was in because of the hanging out with her brothers business. So far this week, she'd done a pretty good job at keeping it up!! But sadly, she knew eventually she'd have to come down from cloud nine and the reality of the world and all the drama it held for her would soon hit her like a train.

But again, for the mean time, she would continue to enjoy this overly perky thing she got going.

Saying Derek was doing better today was maybe not entirely true. He was giving himself the label of 'better than yesterday' however because if he told himself that it would be true. Right? Positive thinking and all? Anyway, the initial shock had worn off and now Derek was going about things slightly numbed, but better. He'd get through this. It was would just take awhile. Thankfully Becca had been amazing and with Anora's help yesterday, Derek could just...move on. Or something ( ... )

Unfortunately Anya was the type to get caught up in her own thoughts and emotions. With her being so happy, yes, she wanted to share that with others, but it didn't exactly make her observant either. She hadn't noticed that Derek sat at her table because she was generally caught up in a whirl of conversation and good times with friends who had sat next to her.

The only reason she happened to notice him this time was because he sat closer and because there wasn't anyone she was talking to yet. But hey, she was always happy to see Derek! Though it was a surprise that he was sitting at this particular table... and she wondered why he didn't sit next to her or directly across from her. Curious, indeed.

"Derek?" She somehow managed to scoot herself closer to where he was, thankful that there weren't a lot of Puffs there yet, "What's up? What ya doing here?" Anya grinned at him, though her perkiness wasn't nearly as crazy as it had been the previous two days. Probably a good thing in this case.

Spotted. Well, it was bound to happen eventually. Derek gave her a smile but kept his eyes mostly on his food. Easier if to come off as okay if he wasn't looking at her. "I'm- hiding out," he said honestly. Derek didn't really want to explain it but his answer made him breath a laugh and he looked back up to smile at her. "Not my best week. What about you? You saw Darin and Taylor right?"

Turning the subject around? Derek? It looked like he hadn't kicked the habit at all. Becca he could be up front with but after breaking to one person, Derek's quota was filled, thanks. It didn't come naturally to lean on Anya. Apparently this hadn't changed anything. And she was so happy. Derek could tell just by looking at her. It was unfair to bring her down over something so stupid and centered around him. So, he'd keep making that effort toward being okay and try to engage in conversation like a normal person.

He did seem a little off, but she wasn't actively thinking that just yet because she was more excited about seeing him and about telling him about the weekend. Though when he said it wasn't his best week and that he was hiding out, she frowned, "Well you've come to the right place, at least! Anything I can do??"

But then of course any concern she may have felt for him was put on hold for a moment when he asked about whether she'd seen the boys. So you know she had to gush a little -- to him of all people, since he was supposed to understand her excitement.

"Yes, I did!! Oh man. That was such a good time! I was so surprised to see them, they didn't even warn me! Did you see them? Did they warn you??" Her bright smile was back in bloom as she thought about it and talked about them... by this time her other friends were tired of hearing about it all, so she was happy to find someone else to talk to. And actually, if she thought about it, she would have been confused by how they hadn't talked about it yet! "Because they should have. Or ( ... )

Derek's lips twitched in an uncomfortable smile as she offered to help. It was sweet but Merlin, if she had any idea... He looked back at his food. "No, not really. No worries." He was reminded that Anya had been brought up in the discussion Sunday and gah! Derek didn't want to be thinking about any of this ( ... )

She felt rather relieved when he said that the boys hadn't warned him either. Anya would have probably been a bit upset if they had sent news to Derek and not her. After all, she was their sister. But give that no mind, as it wasn't the case...

"I'm glad they talked to you too! Did ya get things all sorted?? I had to give them a bit of hell, you know, considering all they put me through," She flashed a winning smile, proud of herself for doing the best she could to get under their skin, "But it was all out of fun. Though I was heaps more upset with Darin, since I saw him first..."

Oh, and then he had to bring up the ball which you know would completely side track her further, "Yes I did! And boy, were they upset that I have a date!" Cackles of glee issued from her mouth as she clapped her hands together, "I wish you were there to see the reactions. Priceless. They haven't changed one bit in the overprotective brother business."

"Yeah." Derek swallowed past a lump and flashed a more sincere smile. "It was good to talk to them. I...might have yelled a bit but it all worked out," he agreed. It had been good to see the twins. He was glad he wasn't going to have to waste the first bit of hols being upset with them when they finally got to go either. Now break was something to look forward to. Possibly for a few reasons ( ... )

"Well, of course you yelled!" Anya encouraged, "They deserve every little bit that we give them, I fully believe that. It wouldn't be right to forgive them instantly... though, I mean, it didn't take that long to forgive them. But at least we got out what we needed to say, right?" Yeah, so she was rambling on about this, but she tended to do that when happy about things. Or you know, all the time.

She started eating some of her food, taking a sip of her water to wash it down before speaking up again, "Was he?" The grin plastered on her face stated that she was happy about this news, "I mean..." Anya cleared her throat, "That's horrible. I shouldn't upset him so..." Ha! Her tone was not sincere in the least, obviously.

"Anyway! Did you and Hannah figure out what you're going to wear to the ball yet?" Oh, sweet ignorance.

Getting out what he needed to say. Yep. Derek was brilliant at it.

He agreed completely that the twins had deserved it all. And still did to a certain extent. Just because they'd come back and things were good didn't mean they couldn't hold it over them for a bit longer. The letter writing prank, for example, still had to be carried out. No question there. Though, when Derek would feel the motivation to get back to that project was anyone's guess. He'd be able to manage by Darin and Taylor's birthday anyway.

Derek was doing pretty well just listening to Anya, letting her carry the conversation right up until it inevitably fell back on him. The Ball. Derek's hand faltered for a second, clinking his spoon against bowl before he froze. Oh, Merlin. Yes, the knife was still there. That twist? Yeah. He should have remembered sooner that bringing up the dance would lead here. Instead he'd walked right into it.

"Um." Derek paused, collecting his thoughts and searching for control to keep his jaw from trembling. In ( ... )

Wait. Hold the phone!! WHAT had Derek just said?!??!

Anya felt like she was going to have a heart attack, because seriously?!? What the hell, mate?? He did not just say that he and Hannah weren't together anymore!! What in the world!!

She stared dumbly at him, her eyes not even blinking as she gazed at him in surprise. Shock. Horror, really. Wow. It was such a strange feeling she felt. Last year she would have given anything for the two to break up. This year things had changed and she'd become tolerant of them dating... and now? Now what was she supposed to think!!

Derek was single. Derek was SINGLE?!? Okay. Right. That wasn't something she needed to dwell on...

"Oh my word..." Which word was that? Yeah, she didn't know. "Um. I'm-- really, now? That's. Not..." She was talking very slowly, as this was CRAZY!! "Oh. I'm sorry, Derek..." Anya finally settled for, biting her lip as she debated whether to reach out her hand and squeeze his or something.

Right. Now she was staring. Derek pretended not to notice, keeping his attention on his food and then taking a bite of his bread. If he ignored the attention it would go away right? One could hope.

"Oh. I'm sorry, Derek..."

"Yeah, well." He shrugged it off. "It's just a year. You know, no-" Derek couldn't finish the sentence. Even pretending he couldn't discount it, apparently not even to make himself feel better. Derek let go of his spoon and had to cover his eyes for a moment. Don't you dare lose it now. Hold it in. DEAL. He was nearly halfway through the week. He could make it and after that it would get easier. It just had to. Shaking his head and pressing his lips together, Derek dropped his hand. "It's not-" Deep breath. "She doesn't want to date me so, whatever."

"Um... okay..." Anya blinked back whatever confusion she was feeling. She had a lot of questions to ask, she wanted to know WHY Hannah broke up with him. She wanted to know all the details, really. But what business was it of hers? She had no right asking any questions.

And look at him! He looked pathetic, for lack of a better term. Anya wanted to give him a hug. Or something to try to help, but she wasn't sure if he'd rebuff her or not. So she held back for now... stirring the soup that she had in front of her. It sucked that they couldn't talk about this type of thing, but something told her this was kind of off limits for her. And maybe it should be, because when it came to Derek, she was a little biased. She just hoped that this wouldn't cause anything between hers and Hannah's newly formed friendship.

"Well, if you need anything..."

"Well, if you need anything..."

Like a life raft perhaps? Derek didn't know what to say to that. A life raft didn't even make sense. He wasn't drowning. Thank Merlin for that. Oh, muddled brain.

Derek was tired of keeping things in. Part of him did want to talk to Anya about it all. He'd gone over it with Becca though and...for some reason he and Anya weren't as good at talking anymore. Had that started with the twins or... Who knew. Merlin, that didn't mean she was going to leave too did it? An irrational spike of dread shot through Derek and he bit the inside of his lip. Somehow he'd stopped talking to everyone. "Thanks. I- I just don't even know. I didn't expect it ( ... )

Anya would have very much preferred if he would put more on her, talk to her. Something! Anything than this self conscious thing he had going. But if we are to point fingers, one needed to be pointed at her as well, because it wasn't like she felt free enough to talk to him about things either. Like the fact that she was debating on whether or not now was the right time to have a boyfriend or not.

Well, she certainly wouldn't be bringing that subject up anytime now!!

She gave him a sympathetic sort of smile as she nodded, thinking how she hadn't expected it either! Of course she knew none of the details regarding his and Hannah's relationship... she just knew what she saw. And from what she saw, they seemed to be doing wonderfully. So it was odd to see how things worked off... proved the fact that appearances could be deceiving.

"You'll be alright though, yeah? I mean... you're Derek. You'll be fine, I know it." Optimism FTW!!

"Will I?" Derek's tone was uncertain and he looked at Anya with more than a glance for the first time since he'd sat down.

It was fine and well to hear she expected him to be okay. Derek made himself out to be that guy; always okay, always stable. He honestly didn't feel it right now. Maybe everyone just overestimated him. You kept saying you were fine and people stopped asking. Good old Derek. He'd bounce back from anything. Eventually, logically, Derek figured he would. He wasn't particularly confident that it would be soon.
