2 DEAD, 3 INJURED IN HOGSMEADE

Werewolves attacked in Hogsmeade last night, killing two and severely maiming three before members of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures swept in to stop them. Whether the department had foreknowledge of a potential attack is not yet clear, but their response was swift and certainly saved the lives of other residents.

No students were injured in the unusual attack. Hogwarts is currently on Easter break but with preexisting security concerns, Hogsmeade access was to be limited this week despite the break from classes. Given the restrictions and the late hour, no students were present in the village at the time.

Details right now are sketchy, with the Ministry keeping a tight hold on all information while they conduct a thorough clean up job in Britain's only all wizarding village.

REGULATION AND CONTROL CAPTURE WEREWOLVES More Thought Responsible

More details have been released today from Monday night's attack in Hogsmeade, with Regulation and Control confirming that two werewolves were captured on scene but at least one more is believed to have escaped. The Ministry is denying rumors that they knew an attack was coming but they admit they suspected the most recent moon would not pass smoothly.

After scattered reports of incidents over the last several months, field agents this moon were said to be trailing creatures classified as "high risk" all day prior, which enabled several to be on scene when things went wrong Monday night.

"We knew something was up when more than one of us showed [in Hogsmeade]," one admitted, speaking to the Prophet on the condition that his name not be released.

The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures is calling the incident a confirmation of the disturbing trend we've seen recently- a group or groups of werewolves working together during the moon with the intent to do harm. The department would not speculate as to whether the creatures seized this week were responsible for previous attacks or if there might be a larger problem lurking in Britain.

Officials are continuing to investigate the incident and search for the creature or creatures that may have escaped.
