The second sample had a "clean margin", so they went ahead and did the reconstructive surgery on my mother's cheek. She's fretting a bit about the scar, but very glad it's over. As far as I know, that's it: no further treatment (except sunscreen and eternal vigilance) is needed

It's been a bit upsetting, like seeing into the future, imagining a time when she isn't here. My parents have been active and healthy to an almost improbable degree: even my father, who was diagnosed with coronary artery disease 20 years ago, has managed to avoid having even a first bypass.
