The second sample had a "clean margin", so they went ahead and did the reconstructive surgery on my mother's cheek. She's fretting a bit about the scar, but very glad it's over. As far as I know, that's it: no further treatment (except sunscreen and eternal vigilance) is needed.
My parents are chronic catastrophisers: the agitation that results from one of them piloting a car into the wrong lane has to be heard to be believed. But in this case, my father bullied my mother into seeing a dermatologist about a certain dark mole, and was more than vindicated.
I've been using sunscreen for years, but I'm going to be even more religious about putting it on from now on.
