Hat help?

So I am currently making a simple ribbed cap for my 6-year old cousin, and I'm wondering... how long do I need to knit the body of the hat before I start the decrease? I'm knitting in the round on two circular needles, and I foolishly started without thinking about how long it should be. I've knitted about 3-4 inches now. I'm afraid I'm going to ( Read more... )

Will your cousin be wearing it with the brim turned up, like the watchcap shown in this pattern?

THe cap is actually more of a beanie. It has a tightly 1x1 ribbed bottom.

I just made a roll brim hat that would fit a 6 year old. I knit for about 5 inches before my decreases.

It's usual to go 6-8 inches on adult caps before starting the increases, depending on the size of the head. Kids don't have heads that are all that smaller than adults, so you want to go at least five inches before you start decreasing. I'd probably go 6 inches, just to be on the safe side.
