FO: Dashing - A Success Story

I finished the fingerless gloves for my fiance's Christmas present!  Yay!

Pattern: Knitty's Dashing
Needles: Clover's Bamboo DPN size US 8
Yarn: Lion-Brand Wool-Ease Green Heather

This was my first time working with DPNs or cables.  I think this is a great "next step" pattern for beginners.

It all started with the news that Chad had gotten a job - in Wichita, KS!  And was moving up in January - BRRR!
So, I decided to make him some fingerless gloves, that can be worn over other "fingered" gloves, or when it gets warmer, without the under-pair, so he can still use his fingers.
First is the really bad gauge swatch.  It ended up being 17.5 sts for 4 inches, instead of the 20 sts listed on the pattern.  But I decided to go on anyway, mainly because I didn't want to go buy more needles.

Then I began the real thing.  The k4, p1 is very easy to remember, and after a while I was -finally- able to distinguish between a knit stitch and a purl stitch on my own.  Yay for learning!  I followed the pattern through the cables and then evaluated my creation.  It seemed really long.  It then occurred to me that maybe the larger gauge was making longer as well as wider.  So, I put it on some of my coworkers to see where a comfortable thumbhole would be, and started it much earlier than the pattern called for (adjustments below).

Creating the thumbholes were meticulous and stressful.  But I managed it fine with the help of

sarakate (see post) and was very pleased with how my first thumbholes turned out!

Then suddenly, one day it was time to bind off!  So I did, and had fun weaving in the edges.
Before weaving:

After weaving (and before blocking!):

I've heard some miracle stories regarding blocking, so I decided to try it.  I felt it was especially necessary because the tops of the gloves were turning in.

So, I looked up blocking on knitty and followed the directions.  I did one glove at a time, pinned them down, and had fun (but not too much fun) with the iron.

And, we're done!  Yay!

My gauge was 17.5 sts/4 in, instead of 20 sts/4 in. So, I decided to knit a "small" for a "medium" man. But I still had to make some other alterations so it wouldn't be ridiculously long.
After the third cable round, I did 13 rounds of Rib Pattern (not 24) before the thumbhole.

After the thumbhole, I did 14 rounds of Rib Pattern (not 18) before BO.

For the thumb, I did 6 rounds of Rib Pattern (not 9) before BO.
