How the heck do you increase?

Ok, I'm a newer knitter and I'm trying to follow a pattern for the first time (been knitting about 5 months or so).

The first step says to cast on one stitch and knit it. Ok, I can do that. After, the instructions call for an increase of one stitch in each row until you have 24 stitches total.

I'm stuck.

Help anyone?
