"into back of st?"

im making a preemie baby cap, and i got to a point in my pattern where it says:
"Decrease rows: *K1, k2 tog into back of st"

i understand that it means knit one, then knit two together, but what does "into back of st" mean? any help is much appreciated! thanks!!!
