This morning ephraim and I have been looking at things for children's rooms. I have found the gender stereotypes to be shocking - why on earth do things need to be labelled as "for girls" or "for boys"? Why does it seem that there's almost always only a choice between something pale pink with princesses on or an identical thing in blue with tractors on? ( Read more... )

That riles me up sooooooooo badly too, and I don't even have kids. I suspect that if I ever did I'd have to figure out how to make my own clothes and toys for them...

Nah, you would realize that all those 'my kids won't do/wear/eat/like *insert whatever it is you strongly object to here* go right out of the window:) Unless you really indoctrinate them, rather than just guiding them,leaning a sapling against a support, rather than pruning a bonzai, they will kinda chose their own way,which is good and healthy. Forcing either chips or strict vegan, xfactor or mozart on your kids is equally not cool.

Absolutely - I won't mind if she chooses pink fairy princesses, but I do REALLY object to the way that it seems to be all that's available, probably to the point of that real indoctrination you mention.
