Bye-bye plastic. Hello.... corn?

A couple weekends ago I went to the Green Festival. My friend works for the California League of Conservation Voters so a couple friends and I got to get in for free. It was really quite overwhelming. There were soooooooo many exhibitors and visitors packed in this huge space. If you've ever been to MacWorld, or ComicCon, or any kind of expo, you know how insane it can feel surrounded by like-minded people who are trying to see all the booths just like you. Everyone was scrambling for lots of different kinds of samples especially all of the organic, fair trade foods. All of the cups and utensils were made from a biodegradable material called polylactic acid (PLA).

I had heard about these before but had never used them. They look and feel just like plastic utensils and cups. I thought, wow! How wonderful that this stuff exists and what a great solution to our plastic epidemic! I looked up information about PLA online and still thought it was the greatest invention ever. Then today I read this article and see that it's not so easy to phase out our plastic consumption.

>sigh<

The fight goes on. Viva la revolucion.
