Personality: Sam easily comes off as your all around nice guy. He is intelligent, witty, good natured, competitive to an extent, considerate of others and just a caring person in general. But there is another side to Sam that only his family and select few get to see. The side of him that is a hunter, and that constantly puts his life on the line to fight against things that would make an average person's head spin.
Sam always questions authority. He is not one who is willing to just follow orders blindly. He wants to know exactly what he is walking into from the start. He's not afraid to be argumentative with his father or his brother on this point. Especially if he doesn't agree with what they are doing. This however doesn't mean that he doesn't love his father and brother, in fact he loves them both enough that he would give up his own life if it meant saving them. That's a trait that he shares with both his brother and father. They are all willing to sacrifice themselves when it comes to their dysfunctional but close knit family. The bond between the three of them goes just that deep. When it comes down to it, the apple doesn't fall that far from the tree.
For the longest time; he just wanted a normal life away from demon hunting and all things supernatural, but that just wasn't in the cards for him. After first losing his girlfriend and then later losing his father to the yellow eyed demon; he dedicates himself to staying on the path of being a hunter. His determination to save as many people as he can, is what drives him to keep going. Sam is very aware that the demons have a plan for him. And he really wants to know that in the end, he can fight that fate and really be saved. He hangs on to that hope to the point that he will obsess over a case, where he believes the person in question can be saved. As was the case with Madison, not only did he have feelings for her, but he wanted more than anything to see her saved from becoming a monster against her will. Even though he ultimately could not save her, he did have the strength to grant her last request. Though it tore him up to do it, he killed her for her own sake. Killing for him is almost always self defense or a last resort when it comes to innocent people. It's not something he takes lightly and it is a topic that he and his brother have clashed on many times. He knows there is good and evil, but he does see the shades of gray in things or at least he will try to see the middle ground. Which pretty much earns him the reputation as the reasonable Winchester brother in the world of the supernatural. Though that doesn't make him the pushover, not in the least. Taking him lightly or thinking him weak is one of the biggest mistakes that anyone can make. Those who have miscalculated that about him; have found out the hard way that Sam Winchester is one tough customer at the end of the day.
