Luhan glances at his watch quickly and realizes it’s nearly 11pm, honestly a bit too early to make the midnight rounds at the facility. He closes the yellow folder containing the newcomer’s file and administrative paper work under his arm and grabs his labcoat from the small closet inlet next to his desk. Trying to sling it across his free arm he accidentally lets the folder drop and the contents scatter along the ground. Luhan throws the coat back onto his bed and kneels down to pick the papers up. The last piece is a photograph of the newcomer.

Luhan finds himself unconsciously touching the image of the boy’s face with his fingers after picking it up. Matted dark hair framed a milky white face, with dark bruises appearing within the hollows of his cheeks. What struck Luhan though was the emptiness that was in the sallow, half-lidded eyes.

Before entering and exiting the North wing of the Trident Rehabilitation Facility, where the Invalids are housed, there is a small holding bay in which the decontamination station sits. Regulation dictates that it is of the utmost importance to be decontaminated before and after contact with Invalids. While the evidence that supports this is often disputed, protocol takes far too long to change so it has remained the same for the past 30 years. The main objective of decontamination is to reduce bioelectromagnetic burden. Each human individual, valid or invalid has a unique genetic blueprint that expresses a unique electromagnetic field. A little like the way some birds have bioelectric sensors that help them migrate north and south with aid from the Earth’s electromagnetic field, humans have been able to harness the ability to use machinery to detect electromagnetic fields emitted from human individuals. After years of research it was found that those of the Invalids are far more sensitive to local interactions within extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields that is found emitted by validated humans. Also, studies have shown that Invalids that possess powers emit a very high frequency electromagnetic field and the discrepancies between their field emissions and a validated human's emission can cause much stress.

The whirring sound of the decontamination station is loud when Luhan walks into the holding bay. Luhan pushes his labcoat into the decontamination press and while he waits for the equipment to start up he strips down to his briefs, putting the rest of his clothes into his designated locker. The holding bay is tiled off-white, with jarring brightness emitting from fluorescent lights. He makes his way past the lockers and to the decontamination booth but and it’s only when he places his hand on the door, and it moves from beneath his hand, that he realizes that someone was already in there.

A young man, a little on the short side fell out from inside the booth.

“Kyungsoo-ah, didn’t know you were in there, Kris said you were sleeping” Luhan said with a laugh. Kyungsoo’s lips parted a little and his eyes grew really wide.

“Luhan-hyung!”

“It’s been a while.” And Luhan almost goes in to give Kyungsoo a hug but stops a few inches away realizing that both of them were half-naked. Kyungsoo stood there awkwardly for a few seconds before side-stepping a little towards the directions of the lockers.

“Yes…hyung…I should get going though…It was great to see you again.”

Kyungsoo has always been a nervous wreck. Socially awkward since his high school days, rumor has it that he failed his college entrance exams and his father had to bribe one of the colleges to take him in. Granted, after that he excelled academically, but he’s always been self-conscious about his abilities and is full of self-doubt, often thinking that he owes everything of what he is now to his father. After graduating 2 years ago, he went straight into Invalid carer work, but being the youngest of all the scientists and carers at the facility, he often keeps to himself and needs much coaxing to loosen up at the inter-facility functions.

Luhan hears the showers turn on as Kyungsoo disappears around the corner. Sparks of light dance out from the decontamination booth and reminds Luhan he needs to get in or else he won’t be allowed access to the Northern wing.

Inside the booth is dim green lighting that casts long shadows of his limbs on the walls. He’s been in the booth hundreds of times but still finds the green dark shadows a little eerie. Sitting down on the plastic stool, he curls up with his knees tucked beneath his chin while the decontamination process begins.

The entire decontamination process usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes, and Luhan spends this time thinking about what happened between him and Kris earlier.

Kris has been employed at the facility the longest out of everyone. Academically, he’s ranked superior than most his age and his commitment to Invalid rehabilitation is considered admirable by many within the field. But since that field is small, the recognition he gets for his work is limited. His work outside the facility focused on brain emulation or sometimes commonly referred to as “mind uploading”, but because Invalid rehabilitation is such a demanding job, his expertise is often only used within the facility.

When Kim Jongin (also known as Kai, to basically everyone but Luhan) settled at the facility, Kris was able to inject a nano-neurobot substrate into Jongin’s brainstem and began to map the neurological information that was collected. Jongin’s power of teleportation was evident prior to entering the facility, but it was only after a month of neuroinformatic mapping did Kris realize that his powers of teleportation was not limited to physical teleportation. Similar to the way children retreat into fantasy worlds of their imagination, Jongin had the ability to create worlds from words in which his consciousness can seek refuge. To allow these worlds to exist, the words and symbols were written into a small leathery book that was kept on him 24/7. At these times when Jongin was writing or seeking refuge in his subconsciousness, access to neurological information ceased to exist, leaving the Kris’s map of Jongin with gaping holes of unknown brain territory. With this in mind, Kris began to employ his skills of mind uploading with the aim of transferring his own conscious mind to a device that would allow access to Jongin’s world. The theory and science of all of it worked, but every single time Kris connected to the Skhisma brain emulator device, there was some kind of force that held him back from entering Jongin’s subconsciousness. Because of this phenomenon, there was much bioelectromagnetic burden inflicted upon both Jongin and Kris.

This is how Luhan entered into employment at the facility. Luhan spent his post-graduate years studying under the same doctorate professor who mentored Kris and this sparked his interest in brain emulation. Surprisingly despite their common interests, Kris and Luhan had never crossed paths before and when the opening for a position at the Trident facility was advertised in the small social circle that made up Luhan’s academic cohort, the professor encouraged Luhan to pursue the position.

Needless to say, Luhan was successful with his application. Sworn to secrecy on arrival, Luhan was opened up to an entirely different world at the facility. He had never interacted with Invalids on such a personal level before and having these opportunities to help them warmed his heart. There was a lot of tension in the beginning between him and Kris. Even though Kris was by far superior in terms of technical skill and rational scoping, Luhan showed natural talent in neuroinformatic mapping and interpretation. But what annoyed Kris the most was that Luhan could enter Jongin’s world.

BEEP BEEP BEEP, the loud beeping indicated the process was complete and Luhan opened the door on the other side of the decontamination booth and stepped out into the grey sterile room. He pulls out fresh scrubs from the basket and his labcoat from the decontamination press. Shrugging on the labcoat he walks briskly to the metal doors leading to the North wing and presses in the security code.

As soon as the doors open, there’s a slightly stale smell that wafts through the air.  Luhan’s pulse quickens a little as he makes his way to #99082HUN’s room. #99082HUN is housed 2 rooms before Jongin’s which is right at the end of the North wing and Luhan tries to collect himself before knocking at #99082HUN’s door. The light rapping on the door echoes a little, but there’s no response from the Invalid inside so Luhan pushes the door open.

Sprawled out horizontally, the Invalid has his feet up pushing against the wall and his head hanging slightly off the edge of his bed.

“Hello?” Luhan pops his head in the room, “I hope I didn’t wake you.”

The Invalid doesn’t respond and just taps on the wall with his feet.

“Mmm, I’m Luhan.” He notices the food of uneaten food on the bedside and purses his lips, “Why haven’t you eaten?”

Still no response. Luhan sighs and walks over to the bed, sitting down just beside the boy.

“You need to eat to get your strength up.” Luhan sees the boy twitch.

Within seconds the boy pushes against the wall and sat up, pinning Luhan down on the bed by the wrists.

“Uhh… This is super inappropriate.” Luhan whispers, the boy’s nose within an inch of his own. He turns his wrists a bit to try and wriggle his way out of the boy’s grip. The boy is a lot stronger than he anticipated, and even though Luhan probably could escape using his full strength, he didn’t.

The corners of the boy’s mouth turned upwards, forming a malevolent grin on the boy’s face. And then he pulled himself upwards a little and spat onto Luhan, smack bam, right in between Luhan’s eyes.

“…What the hell?!” A rush of shock enters into Luhan’s system and he knees the boy in the crotch and pushes him off the bed. Standing up quickly he accidentally knocks the tray of food off bedside table and runs out the door, closing it behind him.

Luhan can feel the blood rushing to his head as he breathes heavily with his back against the door. The throbbing in his ears gets louder and he wipes the spit from his face with the sleeve of his labcoat.

“Hey… are you okay?” A voice suddenly intrudes his thoughts. Luhan turns to find Kris beside him, his hand resting lightly on his shoulder. Luhan lets out a long breath and nods, but then shakes his head.

“He spat on me.”

Kris’s expression is blank, “You think it’s the first time something like this has happened? Spitting means he’s one of the tame ones honestly.”

“He pinned me down on his bed…and spat on me.” Luhan couldn’t shake the event from his mind, “My mother said they were like us! My mother said that they just nee-”

Kris’s hand lifted from Luhan shoulder, “Your mother? You are your father’s son and you go by the word of your mother?”

Luhan looked down, ears still throbbing, “I grew up with my mother, what other words would I go by?”

“You should’ve grown up with your father, it is Law.”

“My father… he, he disappeared after I was born, what does the Law say about that huh?” Luhan almost chokes on his words as they come out.

Kris remains stoic, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know… but what is she? An Invalid sympathizer?”

Luhan balled his hand up into a fist. “Aren’t we all? We’re sympathizers! Isn’t that why we are here?! Isn’t that why your father helped build the Trident facility in the first place?!!”

“What do you mean my father.” Kris replies flatly, eyes burning.

“This place,” Luhan gestures to his surroundings, “this is your father’s work.”

“How did you know? I changed my name long ago…”

“Kris, changing your name doesn’t change who you are. Why do you deny what your father has given you?”

“My father was insane. He went against the elites and was branded a disgrace.”

“How could you say that… after all he’s done...” Luhan shakes his head in disbelief.

“You don’t know my father!” Kris growls.

“At least you had a father!!” Luhan snarls back with tears in his eyes.

Both of them are surprised at Luhan’s snap. It was the first time Luhan had raised his voice at anyone in the facility. With that, Luhan brushes past Kris and runs back to the holding bay.

After decontamination, Luhan is back in his room. His ears are warm and tears prick his eyes again after he lies down on his bed. Luhan hates conflict and will do almost anything to avoid it, but lying there, thinking back, he realized that what Kris said about mother was out of line. It frustrated him so much thinking about how Kris could reject his own name and disrespect his own father. Luhan flung his arm up over his eyes and tried to forget the whole thing.

A few minutes pass and there is a soft knock at the door. Luhan lifts his arm off of his eyes and sees Kris standing in doorway. Kris steps forward into the room and Luhan turns his entire body to face the wall. He hears Kris’s footsteps stop and the sound of plastic hitting his desk.

“This is my father’s. It's the translated version, it’s the only copy I could find, but if you search the archives you might be able to find the original in Chinese.”

Luhan waited until he couldn’t hear Kris’s footsteps anymore and craned his neck upwards to check what it was that was left on the desk. It was a small red USB flash drive. Luhan slides off his bed and walks over to retrieve the flash drive. Turning it back and forth in his hands he sets it down and pulls out his laptop. The screen lights up and he pushes the flash drive into the port and waits for it to load. It takes a few seconds, and there within the drive was a single mp3 file. Luhan pushes the door closed with his foot and sits down. He double clicks on the file.

"I believe in no God, no invisible man in the sky. But there is something more powerful in each of us, a combination of our efforts, a great chain of industry that unites us. But it is only when we struggle in our own interests that the chain pulls society in the right direction. The chain is too powerful and too mysterious for any government to guide. Any man who tells you differently either has his hand in your pocket or a pistol to your neck."
