The College Life for Me

Oct 25, 2005 21:30

I have always pictured college to mean: learning about certain things and acting in a certain way. You know what I mean, think of "the college life" in your mind for a second.
Anyway, I was in the middle of my Spanish homework and I realized no matter how much we complain about assignments, it is so wonderful to be studying something of true meaning.
Too late had I realized the impact and importance of specific subjects I studied in high school, but I am happy to be grasping such concepts so early in my college experience.
I though I'd make 2 lists, because they are so important to me.
Important events/topics covered in high school:
-ToK
-Intro to the Philosophical greats (reading "the cave", etc)
-Exposure in many different ways to Shakespeare
-Theatre.
-Choir, music theory, vocal technique
-Bio/Physics/Chem and how even though I'm not concentating in it, I can still say I know what a cell wall is, what properties column 7 of the Table has and I can tell the difference between instantaneous and average velocity (indept. and dept. variables too)
-Working in a group (not the assigned type) to help each other and realize a common goal
-Spanish
-Community (in school)
-Reading "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", "Their Eyes Were Watching God", "The Glass Menagerie" and even "A Hundred Years of Solitude"
-Performing in greats such as "The Tempest", "Pride and Prejudice", "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "Antigone" and "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie"

Important things I'm learning in college that so far seem very college-like:
-Learning to truly make new friends
-Learning to be alone
-Glancing at my textbooks and realizing I'm reading: Hawthorne, Emerson, Melville, Poe, Socrates, Plato, Hobbes, Crane, Sophocles...
-Reading The Diaries of Christopher Columbus in their original archaic Spanish
-Learning French.
-Being able to do derivatives
-Studying under trees
-Freedom

Alright, don't want to go too far into this, but yeah, I'll let you know if I think of any other biggies.
Sometimes I'm doing something and I just think: "Now THIS is college"
