firsts and lasts

I'm down in Tucson, ready for my first day of work and the last day of my diet.

Work will be only orientation, and once my transfer from Raytheon SAS to Raytheon RMS is complete at the end of the day, I'll be taking unpaid leave until August 25. The break will be used to house hunt, make the move easy, and work on some of my side projects just for fun.

The diet was very successful. I cannot yet report on its long term effects of cutting out carb cravings, but I can say that I never cheated with "real" food while on the diet. I can also attest that I'm leaner than I've been in a long time.

The diet is the nutrimeal glycemic index reset (for which I can't find the official link). I started the diet for a few reasons:

1. I knew I'd be traveling to ComicCon then to Tucson in the 5 day diet period, and it's harder to eat healthily on the road.
2. I knew I'd have no (real) work and responsibilities during the same period. Hence a diet that could potentially reduce my performance and patience wouldn't be a big problem.
3. I crave sugar a LOT. Some sugar isn't a problem, but it doesn't need to be a regular part of my daily intake.
4. I wouldn't mind losing a couple pounds.
5. My neck acted up Wednesday morning, so I also knew I wouldn't be exercising during the 5-day period.

Here are, from my perspective, the pros and cons:
PROS:
1. I lost weight! I think it was almost 5 pounds, so I'm as light and as lean as I've been in many years, maybe ever. This isn't magic, just the result of 5 days of halving my caloric intake. The surprising part is that I was able to stick to it, to which I credit the low glycemic meals. Which leads us to...
2. I wasn't hungry. I suffered the *effects* of hunger, but not the *feelings* of hunger. The diet is based on you not being hungry, and you can supplement it (as I did) with one fruit and with lots of vegetables.
3. The initial cost of the system ($120 from my gym) was offset by *not buying* 5 days worth of meals on the road. For me, that could easily have come to $100.
4. I literally had more time in my day because the sum total of my mealtimes throughout the day was like 30 minutes. Including "dishes," which was just my "blender cup."

CONS:
1. I was grumpy.
2. I was low-energy. (Not as big a problem, since I had no energetic plans)
3. I missed the taste of eating food.
4. I missed the social aspect of eating food. Every time people went out to dinners, I was like, "hey guys, I'm drinking mine, and not in the fun way."

But since it was just 5 days, the end of the tunnel was always in sight. I can recommend trying this for pretty much everyone I know.
