As if Ginny could sleep tonight.

She was painfully hyperaware that when the small clock at her bedside struck midnight, it would be her father's birthday. And it would be the third time that he wouldn't be there to celebrate it.

Would it ever stop feeling so horribly, awfully surreal? Would she ever get used to the fact that she could no longer wish her father Happy Birthday? Would there ever come a time when anniversaries like this one wouldn't reopen wounds she'd worked so hard to try and overcome?

Her favourite thing about her new room was the window seat. She'd been curled up there, musing about the date, when Ron knocked.

It had to be him.

The floor boards creaked slightly when she put her feet down.

She opened the door slowly, to try and avoid similar creaking with the hinges.

"It's midnight, Ronnie."

Ron hated the nicknames his family gave him, except when Ginny called him Ronnie. Before tonight, the last time she'd used it was before either of them had gone to Hogwarts. When she was still his baby sister, and not the adult she was forced into being these days. A role they'd all had to resume far too soon.

He was about to reply to her when he realised his throat was suspiciously tight. So instead he just nodded, then wrapped both arms around her, forgetting that it wasn't like him to show so much emotion.

While Ginny would always be small next to Ron, she knew that (she took after their mother's petite stature and he took after their father and his tall, almost lanky one), the difference tonight was she felt small next to him.

The dull ache in her chest intensified when he hugged her, because it brought back how long it had been since they'd comforted each other that way. This was not how they normally did it.

Normally, they would argue about whatever it was that was so painful until they pushed each other to an admission of feelings and then they would drop the issue for awhile.

This wasn't like that, though. It was their about dad and his birthday and how he wasn't here and...

Ginny felt the backs of her eye lids prick.

Ron took a deep breath, trying to keep himself from becoming anymore emotional. He couldn't lose face in front of his sister. For someone who rarely displayed emotions, this was about as vulnerable as he would allow himself to be in front of someone else. Even his own family. Though he didn't doubt that Ginny could read his mind to know what he was feeling.

After a moment, he found that he could speak again. "I miss him, Gin."

"I miss being a family," Ginny's response was barely above a whisper.

Her words hit him hard, and he pulled away from her, then moved to the window seat, sitting down and dropping his head into hands.

More guilt. He wondered if it would ever go away. But it wasn't just that. It was Fred and George not being able to be there. It was the rest of his siblings scattered. And it was his parents gone, with no way of seeing them again.

He looked up and said quietly, "I know."

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Ronnie."

The apology tumbled out of her mouth before she even realized she was saying it, or what she was saying it for.

"Gin..." Ron said softly, "Why are you apologising?"

"I couldn't keep our family together. I've tried so hard and I just... couldn't."

She wouldn't look at him as she continued.

"I couldn't make Bill or Charlie stay. I can't make you stay either if you decide to leave. I still haven't found a way to help Fred and George and God knows I'll never be able to make sense of why Percy did what he did."
