Tonks liked working with wards, which was good since the Order certainly needed wards built, rebuilt, or taken down often enough. They made sense to her though, the way they surrounded an area, the way the different spells wove together, each part harmonizing with the others. There was something fulfilling about creating magic that would protect people.

Of course, there was a limit on just how much could really be protected.

"No," Tonks answered bluntly. "We're not."

She'd thought about this a lot lately, wondering what the Order should be doing, what she should be doing. "I don't think we're failing or anything. We have people in the school, the hospital, the ministry. We have a stable headquarters. We keep all of our people safe." She looks down, concentrating on her spell-casting. "That's the trouble though. We can't keep everyone safe and still expect to change the world."

The truth was that the Order had transformed itself from a desperate and disheveled group of fugitives into a stable safe haven. People were rebuilding their lives, people were starting families. The Order couldn't take the risks it used to.
