So dollsome 's post on Harry Potter got me to go back through my old Harry Potter fanfics, all, sadly, thwarted before reaching any sort of completeness. And man, there are a lot on my computer.

Let's have a look, shall we?

- Gone, an AU sixth year fic that was a series of drabbles about Hermione going missing and Ron dealing with that and trying to pick up the pieces. Complete with angsty Shakespeare quote at the beginning.

A sample:

ii. Lapse

He doesn’t bother much with dates anymore. He doesn’t want to know how long she’s been gone, because he knows that the longer it is, the less chance they have of finding her. After a few weeks, he just stopped counting.

It doesn’t make much difference, though - he knows she’s been gone a long, long time.

v. Sympathy

After spending the evening watching him sit and stare dully at the fire, Ginny comes and sits down beside him. She puts a hand on his arm, her eyes sad.

"I miss her too, you know," she says.

Something clenches inside of him, and he looks away.

"Yeah," he mutters finally, "Yeah, I know.'"

vi. Hope

(..)

"..what I'm trying to ask, sir, is if there's any -" his voice breaks. Swallowing hard, he tries again (and God, he hates how desperate his voice sounds). "I mean... is it stupid, to still hope she'll come back?"

- Next, there's a fic from the summer between books 5 and 6, where the Bones family is informed of Amelia Bones' death, as Susan Bones eavesdrops.

- Then, on the lighter side of things, there's a fic where Ginny tries to guide Ron on what to give Hermione for Christmas, with little success (that was the year of the "interesting" perfume, which I think was in book 5?)

A snippet:

Before Ginny could stop him, Ron called out, “Oi, Harry! C’mere!”

Harry sauntered over.

“What are you getting Hermione for Christmas?” Ron asked.

Harry made a noncommittal gesture. “I dunno…A book, probably.”

Ron crossed his arms, looking smug. “Ha! Sorry, mate- you can’t get her a book.”

"What?” Harry said, alarmed. “Why?”

Ron shrugged. “Ask Ginny.”

Harry cast a puzzled look at Ginny, who smiled reassuringly. “A book sounds very nice, Harry.”

Harry looked relieved. Ron, on the other hand, was indignant. “Hey! If Harry gets to give her a book, then why the hell can’t-”

Ginny snapped. “Oh, honestly, Ron, I’m trying to help you, you idiot, and Merlin knows, you’re not making it very easy!"

"And I still have no idea what the hell you're on about!

“Auurrgh!”

“Er…I think I’m going to just... leave... now,” Harry mumbled, and fled as quickly as if he’d Disapparated.

You know, for the Boy Who Lived, he’s not very brave, is he? said a little voice in Ginny’s head. Pushing the thought aside, she returned to the matter at hand.

- And next there's a fic following the big Azkaban breakout of book 5, where thanks to the newspaper coverage I assume everyone would have found out what happened to Neville's parents.

"Convicted of the torture and incapacitation of Frank and Alice Longbottom," Seamus read aloud.

Across the table, Neville's head snapped up.

"Longbottom," said Seamus. "Are they related to you, Neville?"

"Leave off, Seamus," Ron said warningly.

"No, it's all right," Neville said quietly. He took a deep breath, seeming to steel himself for his next words. "They're my parents."

Seamus gaped at him. " Your - your parents? Blimey, mate, I'm sorry." He looked back at the article. "What do they mean by "permanent incapacitation"?"

"They're in St. Mungo's," Neville explained. "They're - incurably insane."

Seamus looked horrified. "What? You - you mean b- because of -?" he sputtered, gesturing to the paper.

Neville nodded. "They used the Cruciatus Curse."

Seamus's mouth worked soundlessly. He looked as if he was about to be sick. "My God, mate. I'm so sorry. I - I didn't know."

"Yeah, well, now you do," Ron cut in coldly. "Don't go spreading it around, all right?"

Seamus nodded numbly. "Yeah, I - no, of course not. Of course I - Christ, Neville-"

"It's okay, Seamus. Really," said Neville, with a sad sort of half-smile.

-And there are several others, none of which are really complete enough for posting even a tiny snippet.

The one fic that isn't on the computer is probably one of my earliest and most worked-on ideas, the great epic that was simply going to be titled 1942, about the first time the Chamber of Secrets was opened. I didn't get much actual writing done, but the planning, oh the planning was intense. Family trees, (the Black family in particular was a large and looming presence), relatives and backstories of minor canon characters, giving Moaning Myrtle an actual last name (Prescott). Plus, original characters, including the main character, who was in the same year and House as Moaning Myrtle and Olive Hornby. It was a lot of fun, except for the part where I didn't really have the follow-through to write an epic length story and I didn't have much in the way of plot ideas other than "Olive is mean to Myrtle, plus, Muggle-borns are getting attacked! Also, Grindelwald...is doing stuff. Aaand, World War II...is happening! ...yeeeeah."

To continue on the Potter track, I'm going with a bunch of people to see the last movie at midnight on the opening day. We're totally dorking out, dressing up and everything, and it was decided that I should be Professor Trelawney, which, awesome. I ordered some giant glasses and a sparkly shawl off Etsy a few days ago in preparation- barring catastrophe, they should get here in time. I'm excited, even though I still have to watch part 1 before the big night.
