Sign-ups are happening over at
therealljidol for Season 7 which, presumably, will be starting in the very near future. (No end date to sign-up has been given so it could begin at any time.)
I know I promised to point fingers, but I can't be bothered right now. You saw what it was like, you want in?
Go for it!
I had no idea what I was in for. I expected a bit of writing before everyone collectively said, "Jesus, you're a fuck-tard," and that would be it. Turns out a lot of people didn't catch on until pretty late in the game. :)
What's it like from the inside? Until sometime past (my) half-way mark I was pretty detached, honestly. At my most vocal, my "contributions" to the green room had about as much to do with
being an assclown as anything. In general, if you make it to the point where you accidentally start to care it quickly becomes aggravating and frustrating. About half of the contestants are even more so (this might just be me), and the polls are galactically so.
But if you last long enough, you come to a place where you have to stop coasting, which is actually kind of nice. You'll start digging deeper and deeper for interesting stories to invent or share. You'll come to realize that spell-checking isn't the only form of editing there is. You'll eventually have to really work at it to craft something interesting and well produced. And something may start to awaken. Eventually, if you're lucky, you'll come out on the other side of that and you'll open up and you'll write freely and unconcernedly.
As the field narrows you'll find others whose writings you'll consistently enjoy and look forward to reading.
All of this is just from a writing standpoint. If you approach it as a social thing you'll find no shortage of people to interact with. You'll form friendships and you'll expand your reading/readership as a result. As much of a ghost-town as LJ seems much of the time, you'll find yourself struggling to keep up with the reading alone, much less interacting in the daily green room posts. If that's your thing. All that socializing was too goddamn much work for me until the field narrowed substantially.
It is a game and oh, the games and shenanigans they will play out. There wasn't much wank and drama in my season, but it's a possibility whenever you concentrate that much internet all in one place. I'm not sure if I'm mentioning that as a warning or an enticement. I like a good train wreck and I love watching all the panties twist.
If you have any interest, you should throw in and try it out. At the very least you'll have tried something a little different. Seems to me a little different is just what a lot of folks need.
Personally, I'm out. I can't make that kind of commitment again. Gary has promised that Season 6 will be the longest it ever runs, so presumably it won't go on as long. I had a great time, it was a good experience, I gained a lot of new faces and voices, I wrote a lot of words that I'm quite proud of, I even did really well. I have no regrets, but I have no intention of going through all of that again, either. :)
