Well, now that I have the interwebs again, I suppose I should update.
For the most part, everything's going pretty well over here in Austria. My luggage got lost for a few days, but we found it. I botched getting my visa so now I have to apply for it here. Registration ends tomorrow and I haven't done it yet because of technical problems. But other than that, things are going well. I've met lots of cool people, most of whom are ironically not Austrian, but rather from other European countries. I imagine that will change in the coming weeks once I have normal classes.
As most of you already know, I am not a particularly social person, so I probably have been spending more time in my room than most people would. However, I have made active efforts to get out and do things, so I have to say I'm pretty proud of myself in that regard.
What I've spent most of my time working on in my room, however, is something interesting. I have had an interest in music for a long time. I've played bass guitar for 5 years, and have been writing lyrics (off and on...more off than on, unfortunately) for 3 or so. I decided that I want to get some of the ideas I've had floating in my head for a long time recorded. Obviously, I don't have the money to spend on some fancy program like ProTools or SoundForge or even freakin' Garage Band, so I'm doing what I guess could be classified as an internet experience: I am attempting to make semi-professional recordings only with freeware.
So far, it's been going pretty well. I have a program that I like for recording, a demo of another program which may be good for editing, a weird pseudo-keyboard program, and a drum machine. The drum machine is hard to use, but I'm learning. I went out and bought a lightly used guitar for 100 Euro today, which is kind of steep, but then again, I can sell it back when I leave and probably get about half of my money back. I consider bass my primary instrument, but some of the tracks will probably need some guitar.
So, that's probably a lot of overly technical information for most people, but the upshot is: I'm hoping to get some music posted up on the internet at some point in the future. It's exciting, to be sure. But it leads to a question that I have been pondering: my project/band/whatever needs a name. The two names I have been considering are "Revolution In Blue Sky" and "Jeder Gegen Jeden" (for my non-German speaking readers - that's in German). Thoughts, prefences?
Once I get settled in to my classes, I'm hoping to go up and visit Uschi in Wien. If other people are in Europe and want to talk with me about getting together and some point, leave me a comment and we'll talk.
