The buying process is a bit crazy (especially the bit at the end where you will spend an hour doing nothing but signing documents [hopefully you will have paid good money for a lawyer to explain to you what you are signing]), but if you're going to be in the DC area for a while, there's no reason not to. The only downside to owning is that you have to worry about things breaking (like a/c) and having to replace them... but on the bright side, you get them fixed a lot faster than the landlord would :)

In other news, congrats and good luck. I'd be willing to be a second set of eyes if you want to look at places.
Also you may want to check out foreclosed or bank-owned as those can be cheaper and we know there are alot of them around these days
