#376: Eavesdropping

Connor Temple isn't very good at dropping any eaves. Literally or metaphorically. He always talks too loud so anyone who's walking past hears just about everything he says: he's pretty sure that any secrets he did have that he's voiced to someone - even Abby( or Becker in a moment of weakness) - were heard by everyone wandering down the hallways of the ARC. Connor swears that the metallic hallways echo particularly well when he's talking.

When he's trying to listen in on conversations he shouldn't be hearing, it's always like some kind of scene from a slapstick comedy film. It's bloody ridiculous: he'll stand behind the one item with wheels that moves with the slightest pressure, sending him sprawling to the floor in a flurry of paper (or, once, a mop in a particularly memorable instance with Stephen and Nick all that time ago), the cart he was trying to sneakily hide behind rolling innocuously away down the hall. Or he'll be leaning on the door and it'll creak open.

Mostly there's nothing interesting to listen in on anyway, but Connor's mind doesn't ever stop so he's attuned to all the ambient sounds around him. Oftentimes it's just a buzz of machinery in his lab, the sounds of people's voices and snatched conversations - "I swear to god, that fucking elephant grandfather" and "I hear there are ducktatodons down in the menagerie but I've never seen them" - and Connor has to resist the urge to stick his head out the door and correct them that it's a woolly mammoth, or that Sid and Nancy are diictodons, duh.

And really, he doesn't want to eavesdrop on most people. He doesn't care all that much and they talk when they walk past him. The one person he does want to eavesdrop on is Becker, and when he takes the longer route back to his lab to walk past the slightly ajar door in the hopes of hearing Becker on the phone to get some glimpse in to the man's private life.

Of course, he's never subtle enough and Becker often goes suspiciously silent whenever Connor gets to outside Becker's office. Captain Becker's Connor-detecting skills are pretty impressive.
