#373: Are you more likely to please others or to please yourself?

The thing about Connor Temple is that he's eager. He's really eager. He's so eager to help, to try hard, to trust, to believe in the best of people. He's got an enthusiasm that most people lose when they realise that Santa isn't real and that people die. When they work out that mothers can walk out on their children and that fathers leave and that other kids are bullies. He's kept that spark of innocence and looks at the world like it really is a wonder, like it really is a beautiful miracle. And when he's hurt, or something upsets him and it shows, the people around him (even battle-hardened ex Special Ops soldiers) are compelled to protect that spark, gather around him and make him smile because his attitude is so rare.

And maybe the main thing worth knowing about Connor Temple is that he doesn't have a selfish bone in his body. He'd give anything and everything to make a friend happy, bend over backwards to please a stranger. On some people it might come across as being desperate or as trying too hard, but that's Connor, he's sincere and innocent and it makes people shrug and just continue with their business because that's Connor and sometimes he defies the rules. A genuine little thing that's eager to please everyone in the world, to make everyone smile.

Try telling him that, though, and he'll shrug, endlessly modest. He'll look kind of uncomfortable and fiddle with his hat and give a rueful smile and a shrug of his shoulders and he'll say, "Well, it's what everyone does, innit," because Connor Temple still views the world like every bad person has some good in them, through the innocent eyes of a child, wanting to be liked, eager to please and desperate to belong, putting the happiness of others above himself and completely, and totally unaware of the effect that he has on the others around him.
