Just Like Heaven
The phone rang and nothing was ever the same again.
He’d ended the call with I love you. Of all things, I love you. And then he’d hung up, not giving her a chance to babble uncomfortably as she fumbled for a reply, for something to say back in the midst of her supreme shock over his words.
The phone slipped from her hands and she sunk to the floor, leaning against the wall and staring across the hall into the kitchen.
It suddenly hit her that they had graduated from quick, spontaneous bursts of I-love-you, and heat-of-the-moment, God…love you, to endearing drops of I love you at the end of their phone conversations.
This was monumental. It was perfect and just felt…right.
