Sam Knows Best
Ambling into the kitchen in the morning, Jack strode to the counter and reached for the mug that Sam always got ready for him when she was up first, only to discover that what was in his cup was definitely not coffee.
“What’s this?” He turned to her and frowned.
Sam leaned against the counter and sipped at her own steaming mug. “It’s tea.”
He peered into the cup and frowned again, poking one finger into the lightly-colored liquid. “Tea?”
“It’s better for you,” she insisted.
“Why?” Jack regretted the question as soon as the word left his mouth, because Sam quickly began spurting out a list of reasons why tea was all around healthier than coffee.
He tuned much of it out, but heard, “…and it can help prevent Alzheimer’s . . . lowers your blood pressure . . . can reduce intake of bad cholesterol . . . been known to be a stress reliever…”
Jack set the tea on the counter and crossed his arms, raising one eyebrow at Sam. “So you think I’m a forgetful, stressed-out old fogy on the verge of a heart attack?”
Sam gave him ‘the look’ and said nothing for several beats.
Jack knew she was only doing this because she cared about him, and sitting at a desk for the past few years wasn’t doing much for his health. He heaved a sigh and reached for the mug on the counter again. “Alright, already! I’ll drink the damn tea!”
Sam smiled smugly, then leaned in to give him a kiss. “Thank you, sweetie. I’ll be sure to tell Walter to bring you tea in the office from now on.”
Rolling his eyes, Jack heaved a sigh and shaking his head muttered, “For cryin’ out loud.”
