Observe

Do not approach them if at all possible. He wondered if this was his entire lot in life. That it would center around one Terrence Einstein Atlas. He didn't just watch and follow his major movements, but also the smaller things in daily life. By now, he knew every Chinese place that delivered in the greater Brooklyn area. He was familiar with every movie rental shop and was able to spot and name every homeless bum in this particular borough that Tea lent a helping hand to every so often. The last bit was a small surprise; an anomaly in the immortal's otherwise shady character makeup.

Record
Seth wrote or verbally recorded each finding as if it were gold. He was on a learning curve as a fledgling watcher and each new discovery about his subject made him excited as any schoolchild making progress on a very tough subject.

Never interfere
Of course, he thought about approaching the immortal, but never did. He had heard and learned that doing so never went well at all. Some immortals would kill if you so much as encroached upon their personal space. No, no, he stayed a safe distance and did his best to curb his more rampant curiosity.

On a break, he finally opened the book and what he read was not as entertaining as he thought. It wasn't a fiction book at all, as he supposed. His wife's diary.

He read a few pages, each entry looking similar to the diary that he, himself, was creating.

~~
...I can never forgive them Seth. What  ___ did was reprehensible. They outright killed my subject. A fine warrior he was too. A survivor, cut down in the prime of his immortality for simply getting in the way. All he did was spot a fellow watcher and make as if to walk over to them. I told the board. I told them! He was no harm to anyone but those that would take his head. He had no knowledge of watchers that he indicated and there was no reason to ...well, the long and short of it, I was told to mind my own and wait for my next assignment without so much as a by your leave.

~~

My new assignment is a headhunter. Moreover, you can bet that ___ had something to do with assigning me this subject. An outright cold-blooded killer who makes no distinction between mortal and immortal. I have doubled the distance between them and myself. I do hope that this is acceptable to my superiors. I think I may be taking 'not interfering' to a whole new level. Perhaps I have lost my edge. I just do not know anymore.

~~
No more entries after this, he noted and then his eyes widened at the date. It was one day prior to her death. It took all Seth's efforts not to slam the book down, stuff it back in the satchel, and make his way straight back to headquarter to give someone there, anyone, some bloody Hell. No, he would do his duty, and think this through. It may not be as harsh as his wife assessed. Perhaps it was all a misunderstanding and someone in the agency did not simply put his wife in the line of fire over inter-office politics.
