Gem and Scott drew their laser weapons.
“How did you do that?” demanded Dr. K.
“I mean you no harm,” Tyzonn pleaded. “Take me to the Power Rangers. They know me.”
“We are the Power Rangers,” said Scott.
“What's left of the Power Rangers, anyway,” Ziggy added.
“And we don't know you,” Scott interjected.
“You can't be,” Tyzonn said with disbelief. “You must be the new Power Rangers. Where are the old Power Rangers?”
“There's only ever been one team of Power Rangers,” explained Dr. K.
“And that's us,” Gem added.
Tyzonn stared blankly. “What has happened to Earth?” he asked. “All the great cities are in ruin and my friends are gone and forgotten.”
“What business do you have with the Power Rangers anyway?” asked Scott.
Tyzonn turned to face him. “I was a Power Ranger once,” he said thoughtfully. “I still have my morpher. It's in my ship. I can go get it and show you.”
“I can't allow you to leave,” said Dr. K solemnly.
“It's very dangerous out there,” Gem warned.
“Besides, before you do anything you need to put some clothes on,” Ziggy added.
An embarrassed smile crossed Tyzonn's face as he realized he was wearing just a sheet wrapped around his waist. “Yeah, I guess I do.”
“There's some clothes in the spare room,” Scott said and pointed the way for him.
When Tyzonn returned he was dressed in Flynn's boots, cargo pants, and blue shirt.
“You'll need a jacket” said Scott.
“This is all I could find,” he replied, holding Dylan's zip-up hoodie.
“I thought we burned that,” Dr. K remarked.
Tyzonn put on the faded black jacket which fit loosely and zipped it halfway. “I can take one of you to where my ship is outside the city.”
“I can't allow that,” Scott said.
“I agree,” Dr. K added. “As long as the shield is down the city is vulnerable.”
“Let me help,” Tyzonn pleaded. “There may be something I can do.”
“I'm going to the control center for a test of the new shield systems,” Dr. K said. “You and Gem will come with me.”
“Ziggy and I will stay here and hold down the fort,” Scott said.
“Aw, why does Gem get to have all the fun?” Ziggy moaned.
“Because,” Dr. K said, “It's your turn to do the dishes.”
Ziggy pouted. “Hurry back baby,” he said to Dr. K.
She blushed and tried to pretend Ziggy hadn't used a term of endearment in front of the stranger in their midst.
-----------
They arrived at the new Corinth City control center. A warehouse had been converted for this purpose after the original control center was destroyed. Wires extended in all directions from the roof to various points on the grid of the dome.
Col. Truman greeted Dr. K with apprehension about her bringing Tyzonn, but she convinced him that he was no threat and she would take responsibility for him.
“In order to power the shield some vital systems will have to be taken off line temporarily,” said the Colonel to Dr. K. “We will begin by powering down the water purification systems.”
“I suggest that the air purification systems not be taken off line,” Dr. K advised.
“Negative, Doctor,” he replied, “but I assure you that the downtime will be kept at a minimum.”
“What's happening?” Tyzonn asked.
“They're about to start the test,” Gem said eagerly. “It's gonna be so cool!”
A diagram of the dome appeared on the big screen indicating that the dome was not powered.
“Water purification systems power down,” ordered Truman.
“Water purification systems powering down,” replied Hicks.
“Air purification systems power down,” the Colonel ordered.
“Air purification systems powering down,” replied Hicks.
“Air impellers power down,” ordered Truman.
“Air impellers powering down,” replied Hicks.
“Power shields to ten percent,” ordered Hicks.
The dome on the screen indicated with green colored bars that power was flowing to the shields. They could hear zaps and pops of electricity arcing on the shield superstructure.
“Shield power at ten percent,” said Hicks.
“Increase shield power to fifty percent,” ordered Truman.
“Increasing shield power to fifty percent,” Hicks replied.
The bars on the screen rose to indicate that the dome shields were at half power.
“Fifty percent and holding,” said Hicks.
“So far so good,” Dr. K said to herself.
“Raise shields to full power,” ordered Truman.
“Raising shields to full power,” replied Hicks.
The crackling and popping became louder as power was increased to the dome.
“Power at sixty-two percent and holding,” Hicks reported.
“Give me more power Hicks!” ordered the Colonel.
“That's all the power I've got,” Hicks said.
“Re-route power from the civilian sectors,” Truman ordered.
The evening lights of Corinth darkened as all the residents lost power.
“Power at sixty-four percent and holding,” said Hicks.
“It's not enough!” the Colonel groaned. “Power the shields down slowly and restore civilian power.”
“Aye, Colonel Truman,” he said.
The popping sounds from outside subsided and the graph on the screen showed the power dropping to zero.
“Restore power to vital systems,” ordered Truman.
“Restoring power now,” he answered.
“Failure!” lamented Dr. K. “A total failure!”
“The shield works,” said Gem. “It just needs more power.”
“Could I make a suggestion,” Tyzonn said meekly.
“Okay, let's hear it,” said Dr. K skeptically.
“My ship has more than enough power to energize the shield. But…”
“But, what?” asked Truman.
“I'll be stranded here on Earth,” he said dolefully.
“You and me both,” remarked Dr. K.
“Where is your ship?” asked Truman.
“Only ten kilometers outside the city,” he said.
“It will have fallen into enemy hands by now,” Truman warned.
“No, it's cloaked,” he answered. “You'll only need the power generator. It can be loaded on the back of a truck by three or four people.”
“Dr. K, come see me in my ready room,” said Truman.
“Gem, stay here with Tyzonn while I talk to the Colonel in private,” Dr. K said.
-----------
Dr. K met with Col. Truman in his ready room, which was a cramped office strewn with papers and outdated office furniture.
“I don't want to send the Rangers out there with him,” said the Colonel. “If he decides to try something they'll be sitting ducks.”
“Without the shield we're all sitting ducks,” Dr. K remarked. “Believe me, if Tyzonn's intentions were malicious he's had ample opportunity to act.”
“Let me send in a unit with him,” Truman offered.
“I don't want to draw attention,” Dr. K said. “We need only the Rangers for this mission.”
“Alright, but if anything goes wrong…”
“I know, I know. There'll be hell to pay.”
