Making “Ha Ha” with Harley Quinn

I was going to post this on scans_daily, but I procrastinated, and then it got shut down. But, due to the urgings of benicio127, I decided to try and present this as best I could because I've got a question about an ambiguous evening between Joker and Harley.

Batman: Harley Quinn is a one shot that came out in 1999 during No Man’s Land and is by Paul Dini and Yvel Guichet. It’s basically Harley’s origin and introduction to the DC Universe. She’s a psychiatrist at Arkham, meets the Joker, falls for him, they go on a crime spree, etc.

Here’s what I’m wondering. The first part story is told from Harley’s point of view (she’s talking to Poison Ivy), and towards the end of that, she recounts her “breakup” with the Joker. I was wondering if during that time did they ever…you know…get to the punch line?

Harley tells Ivy that they went back to the hideout for a night of sheer joy, and it shows them drinking wine in a bedroom. Cut back to Ivy, where she makes snide comments. Harley says “We drank a toast, then he held me tight. I felt my heart do flip-flops! I was fainting! Swooning! Senseless with delight! Everything after that was a blissful blur!”

Ivy - “Drugged you, huh?”

Harley insists she wasn't drugged. She says she woke up and Joker was gone, leaving a note instructing her to go to an old rocket ride in the amusement park. She does, and it’s a trap. Joker appears on a TV screen and says:

Y’see, over the past few weeks, I’ve felt some changes coming over me since you entered my life. I’ve been reminded of what it’s like to be part of a couple, to care for someone who cares for me. It’s the first time in recent memory I’ve had those feelings…and I hate having those feelings! They’re upsetting, confusing and worse, distracting me from getting my share of Gotham now that the getting’s good! Sniff! I will always treasure our days together, but sadly, inevitably, the time has come for us to part. Farewell, my sweet Harley Quinn. I will mourn you.

And then he laughs like a maniac, and the rocket crashes. So what do you guys think, Harley sets off Joker’s joy buzzer, and all of a sudden he’s afraid of commitment? Or did he realize he needed to get rid of Harley before giving his seltzer bottle the chance to squirt and he just drugged her as Ivy guessed?
