Joaquin Phoenix is being lined up to play the Incredible Hulk. Joaquin
The 'Walk the Line' star has been approached by Marvel Studios to take on the role of Bruce Banner and his superhero alter ego in the forthcoming comic book blockbuster after Edward Norton was dropped from the film, reports website CHUD.
Joaquin hasn't made a movie since 2009's 'Two Lovers' after announcing his intention to quit acting to become a rapper.
However, his efforts and bizarre public appearances -including a shambolic TV interview with David Letterman - were widely speculated to be a hoax as he was being filmed for a documentary by pal Casey Affleck.
Announcing Edward had been dropped from the 2012 movie earlier this week, president of production Kevin Feige blasted the actor's attitude.
He said: "Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members."
However, Edward's representative hit back, saying his client had been in discussions to return to the role but Marvel pulled out even though both parties were about to agree a deal.
He said: "This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light."
In 'The Avengers', Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson are all expected to reprise their roles as superheroes previously featured in other Marvel movies including 'Iron Man 2', 'Thor' and 'Captain America'.
