"I became a doctor because of Patch Adams."

Well, I just watched a really fucking terrible episode of House. The humour/snark on that show cuts both ways - sometimes what comes out of House's mouth surprises a laugh out of me, and sometimes I like it because it's provocative and funny and makes me reconsider some of my own assumptions/prejudices. But tonight's episode was insulting; it wasn't about House being an asshole, or about shocking the audience out of complacency. It was about confirming gender-based assumptions about intelligence, and then trading on the physical attractiveness of the female actors on the show. (Speaking of which, have they ever had a woman on the show who was bigger than a size five? Watching this directly after Bones has convinced me that all women have tiny bodies and big heads and looking kinda hungry all the time. Ack!) Anyway, thanks for ruining my evening, House writers. Jesus.

I needed some cheering up after tonight's chorus of disappointments on FOX, and right away LJ obliged. brynnmck has posted the most fabulous Fraser meta. Go check out her post and read about why Constable Benton Fraser, RCMP, is pretty much made of awesome. Brynn's post made me so very, very happy. I love RayK and Vecchio and Welsh and Frannie and all the rest, but in my heart of hearts I'm in due South for the Fraser. And Brynn has perfectly articulated why he's such an exceptional creation, and she does a great job of explaining how a character can be so beautiful and generous and kind and still flawed, but in a very human way. And this is why, after nearly a year and a half of reading fic just about every day, and considering his character constantly, and exchanging numerous emails with folks like zabira, I'm still trying to puzzle out all his nuances and quirks and contradictions. Oh Fraser.
