I don't like guns at all - I've seen the damage they can inflict firsthand, both times upon former neighbors in "good", upscale neighborhoods. One was a woman who jumped in front of her husband after his father pulled a gun on him during a fight, the other was a stupid 14 year-old who was playing Russian Roulette with his father's police-issued sidearm.

The only people I believe who should be allowed to have ready access to firearms, aside from the police/military, are those who live in rural areas. If you live in Alaska or Montana and there is a bear problem, you should be able to shoot the critter if it's threatening you. If you're a rancher and have problems with critters further up the foodchain endangering your livestock, I don't have a problem with your being armed to protect your herds. I have a problem with people in cities and suburbs wanting to have weapons handy. If someone breaks into your house, and everyone is legally prevented from owning firearms, clock 'em with a golf club or a big Maglite. Then you have a groggy suspect for the police to take care of as needed.

One of the problems that I see is that with guns, it's too easy for someone with a hair-trigger temper to hurt someone else - my neighbor's father-in-law, or the nasty husband at Pincey's former pool. You combine easy access to firearms with a bad attitude and liquor, and it's a recipe for trouble. There's absolutely no real reason for ANYONE in the suburbs or the city to own a weapon. But you get these idiots with fears and attitudes about "self-defense" demanding the right to own guns and it just leads to more problems.

Last week, we had an agent with the DEA arguing with one of our Security Officers because he wanted to take his service weapon into Disneyland. Our policy is that weapons of any kind are not allowed. Our officers don't carry them, although Anaheim Police Department officers who are posted there are armed. APD is last resort for trouble-makers, as far as we're concerned. This DEA agent was insisting that he needed to have his sidearm, just-in-case, for defending his wife and child, and my buddy was arguing with him that this was Disneyland, nothing out of the ordinary was going to happen. The guy was unreasonable - it's Orange County - not Watts or Compton. I think it took about 20 minutes to talk him into stowing his weapon, like every other peace officer that is visiting. It's people with attitudes like that that cause part of the problem - they want to see danger everywhere. Sure there are bad people everywhere, but most are not stupid enough to cause a scene in a public place - at least not around here. Just be reasonable and use your brains, rather than firepower.
